Nathan Davis & Georges Arvanitas Trio: Live in Paris - Sam Records 180g Vinyl
product description
LIMITED EDITION 3LP BOX SET/ ONLY 1500 PRESSED
Style is not a given. Not many musicians reach the level of artistic personality where you can unmistakably recognize them. It takes character, roots, honesty, soulfulness. Nathan Davis had style. His tone on tenor was unique. So was his soprano sound and his distinctive approach to flute. His musical world was equally original and knew no boundaries.
Pure Pleasure releases are created from the original artwork and re-mastered from the original tapes by engineers who on occasions, have mastered the originals. Some in the original studios! The sleeves are re-created from the originals. An exciting journey! The End Result?
The Touch. The Feel. The Look. The Craftsmanship. What could be better? Nathan Davis & Georges Arvanitas Trio: Live in Paris 180g vinylThis concert in Paris is audible proof that as a performer, his fluid phrasing, distinct articulation, booming bottom register, growls and shrieks were fuelled by tremendous drive and furious invention – the man was on fire!
These live sessions demonstrate the limitless invention of Nathan's solos. Holding no punches, weaving signature phrases, shouts and riffs into his solos, he was a fierce and fervid performer. With a sort of hollow resonance at the heart of his reedy and warm sound, Nathan Davis was a highly original artist, from an era when having a distinct sound on your instrument was the grail of jazz artistry. Harold Land, Jimmy Heath, John Gilmore, Paul Gonsalves, Charlie Rouse, George Coleman, Booker Ervin, Clifford Jordan … Jazz is made of such giants and Nathan Davis was one of them.
REVIEWAnalogplanet JAN 2019 by Michael Fremer
10/10 Sound & Music
Sam Records just issued a never before released series of absolutely rocking live performances by the under appreciated American-born tenor/soprano saxophonist and flutist Nathan Davis (1937-2018)
The ballads are soulful and beautiful (a gorgeous flute version of "Yesterdays"), the gutbucket stuff is deep (Davis's "The Hip Walk"), rich and explosive and Davis's textured phrasing will have you anticipating the next churning turn. You'll hear the Coltrane connection in places but also the hard edged, R&B, almost rock (or strip club-like) "jump music" he played in his early days. I was reminded as much of Charlie Rouse as I was of Coltrane (with a side order of Leon Thomas!). Once the influences fade, Davis's style comes clearly into focus. Side 5 ends with the moving, mysterious "Blues For Southeast Asia" and when it concludes you'll come away knowing that Davis was a complete and versatile musician and if you are like me you'll wonder how it's possible that you've never before heard of him.
Full Review:"Live in Paris" – Nathan Davis, (sax); Georges Arvanitas (p, org); Jack Diéval (p); Jacky Samson, Jacques Hess (b); Franco Manzecchi, Charles Saudrais (dr)
