The Dave Clark Five's American debut album is a joyous, bouncy, high energy set that showed considerable promise in a band that was viewed at the time as the first real threat to the supremacy of the Beatles. They also wrote a lot of their own material and recorded hits that burned up the charts, even supplanting the Fab Four at the #1 position at one point. But this was to be their best non-greatest-hits album, and there are a few notable missteps here that prevented DC5 from being taken seriously enough, and over time would diminish their impact and longevity.

Side 1 of the original vinyl starts very promising though. The title track was as good as anything the Beatles were doing at that time, and its a high energy tune that remains timeless. All of the Time is a great under-appreciated tune with unusual musical structures and great harmonizing. It's one of the best deep cuts in their entire catalog. The cover tunes Stay and Do You Love Me are decent run-throughs; maybe a little stiff-sounding, but easily competent. And Chaquita threatens to blow up the group's "clean cut" image with its mystifying guitar and sax under heavy reverb.

Side 2 is where it falls apart. Bits and Pieces is another major deserved hit, but I Know You starts the downhill slide. It's a decent enough track, but it's straightforward pop that isn't as adventurous as anything you've heard up to this point. Now, here's where their limitations scream out to you. No Time to Lose is indeed nothing more than a cheap rewrite of Twist and Shout that should've made the Isley Brothers bring a lawsuit against them, and Doo Dah? A rewrite of an old Stephen Foster chestnut that I can't figure out if it's a parody or just a joke. You almost have to skip this one. Time recovers the proceedings a little with an unexpected jazzy arrangement, and She's All Mine closes the album with a decent if unremarkable flair.

At the time this was one of the hottest British Invasion albums around;  no mean feat during the first half of 1964 if you weren't the Beatles. In spite of its glaring flaws, it's still a pretty excellent set in a time when album making hadn't quite yet matured. It's a shame the band couldn't maintain even this quality over the next three years, but this was as respectable a start as you could expect by anyone. And they still wrote some pretty enduring hits.

(EXCERPT FROM AN ONLINE REVIEW BY RUSSELL NEWTON, ALL MUSIC GUIDE  /ALLMUSIC.COM/)

As is the case with other Dave Clark Five albums from the mid-60's, Mono versions of the group's albums are much more sparkling, raw, direct and otherwise gratifying than the fake "electronic" stereo versions (true stereo versions do not exist). The only serious competitor to the Beatles (except, possibly, for Stones), Dave Clark Five provided some of the most creative "Beat" sounds of the British Invasion wave and this, one of the group's finest works, contains two of its greatest charting hit singles: Glad all over and Bits and Pieces. It is unbelievable how well their music has aged.

·                                     CONDITION:

·                                     THE RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)           WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++, JUST A NOTCH BELOW NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions (probably just sleeve scuffs inflicted in storage over the years) ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly  insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)            Mono pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more  preferable to its FAKE ("electronically rechannelled") stereo counterpart. We estimate that FAKE stereo copies of this album outnumber monos by a ratio of at least 3:1.  (NOTE: electronically rechannelled versions with this, withdrawn, cover probably do not exist; only monos appear to have been produced; we are not entirely certain)

(d)           True Stereo copies of this album are NOT known to exist.

(e)            Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                                     THE COVER

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+(+)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-          Back cover has a  peel-off mark, probably from the careless removal of the price sticker (less than 2 square inches in size)

-          Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3

-          The cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-          Cover shows some yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.

-          Front cover has a few yellowish dust speckles scattered here and there (these tiny spots are not overly obtrusive or distracting)

-          Visible greasy stain noted on the back panel (less than 3 square inches in size, total)

-          Cover has a minor wrinkle (air bubble in paper slick ) on the back panel

-          Cover has two corners slightly dinged (nothing significant)

-          Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the seams

-          Cover has a small quality control (inspection) stamp on the back panel (BARELY VISIBLE)

NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE  COVER
