WE, THE 1972-73 FRESHMAN CLASS OF SOUTHLAND BIBLE INSTITUTE dedicate this, our first album, to Rev. and Mrs. Raymond Childress who have given of their love and service to Southland far above and beyond the normal call to duty. The Childress' left Southland in 1949, furth- ered their training at William Jennings Bryan College, and after a successful min- istry with the Youth for Christ, returned to Southland in 1959. In 1961 Rev. Child- ress became President of Southland and has had a successful ministry, seeing many young men and women trained to serve the Lord. Mrs. Childress has been greatly used of the Lord as head of the Music Department, and her greatest joy has been seeing the many music groups bringing glory to the Lord in song and testimony. SOUTHLAND BIBLE INSTITUTE IS: SOUTHLAND BIBLE INSTITUTE is located 17 miles southeast of Pikeville, Kentucky, was brought into being as an answer to prayer and through the dedicated lives of Rev. and Mrs. Joesph Otteson, September, 1942, the school was opened to dedicated men and women to (1) encourage them to achieve a Christ-like character through constant, conscious, communion with the Lord; (2) to enable them through the study of the Word to lead others into a saving experience of the Lord Jesus; (3) to prepare them to be pillars of established Christian testimony in their local communities; (4) to help train those who feel called to full-time serv- ice at home and abroad. Southland is fundamental in its doctrine, evangelistic in its outreach, with a double emphasis on the Spirit controlled life and the pre-tribulation, pre-millennial coming of the Lord. Southland is a growing Institution. In 1961 the total student body, faculty and staff numbered less than twenty. Today the num- ber totals well over one hundred. The property value has tripled during the same period as improvements are constantly being made. One example is the new wing which has just been added to the Ladies' dormitory which is valued over $60,000. Southland operates in all matters upon the principle of faith. No faculty or staff member is salaried; all come by faith trusting the Lord to meet their needs. The maintaining and enlargement of the school in the coming years will depend upon the gifts of interested Christian friends. Southland's music groups are in constant demand. We make no apology for our type of music, which, like our doctrine, is conserv- ative and Christ-centered. A great portion of our music centers around the theme of the Second Coming of our blessed Lord. His soon coming is a blessed hope, a purifying hope, a sure hope, a satisfying hope.
