American Folk Song Mass Rev. Mitchell Canterbury Choir RED Vinyl LP Record VG+

"Father Mitchell's Folk-Song Mass is a significant expression of a deep need within the Church to express her worship in contemporary terms. "However, this Folk Mass not only is contemporary but deeply de- votional. It is easily sung and remembered, and could, with ease, become the vehicle for corporate devotion in any congregation." The Rt. Rev. Gerald Francis Burrill Bishop or Chicago "We often tend to overlook the sheer joy and dynamic exhuber- ance of the Christian Gospel, which after all means the Good News of our Salvation, and Father Mitchell's in his AMERICAN FOLK-SONG MASS has winningly caught this very quality. The profundity of the Gospel's meaning is present with a moving sense of devotion, but the memorable quality is that of the boundless, grateful joy that God so loves Man.".. Tne Rev. Malcolm Boyd, Chaplain to Episcopal Students Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan THE AMERICAN FOLK-SONG MASS is the original work of a young and talented priest of the Episcopal Church, the Rev. Ian Douglas Mitchell, Vicar of Saint Ann's Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Chicago. In an effort to satisfy an inward urge to write a more contemporary score for the Celebration of the Holy Eucharist, Father Mitchell, aware of the great revival of interest in folk music during the past few years, set about the task of giving the Agnus Dei, the Nicene Creed, the Sanctus, Benedictus and Kyrie and other portions of the liturgy a new and exciting "sound" . . . and yet, without detracting from the real reason and purpose of this, the greatest and central act of Christian worship. Presenting this work before various church and college groups, Father Mitchell suddenly found himself swamped with calls from other clergy and interested organizations to come and perform the Mass for them. To supplement himself and his guitar, he took his new Mass to the Canterbury Choir at Northwestern University and introduced the score to the students who tirelessly rehearsed with this priest and added another dimension to this new contribution to the music of the Church. While this album is called the "AMERICAN FOLK-SONG MASS" it could very well be called the "AMERICAN FOLK-SONG EUCHARIST" or the Holy Communion, the Divine Liturgy or The Lord's Supper, or the Holy Sacrifice. Whichever name or title may be used they all essentially mean the same thing though each places a particular em- phasis on one phase of the same Sacrament. It has been written that it is like the facets in a precious stone, each reflecting its own angle of light but all deriving their brilliance from the same central point. In short, the Sacrament is a memorial, a communion, a thanksgiving, an offering, and an act of worship. No title can exhaust the signifi- cance of the thing itself. This accomplished writer, composer, performer and devoted priest has many calls made upon his time to perform not only this Mass, but because of his fine talent, he is often called upon to sing ordinary folk songs. "I tell them," he says, "that I shall be glad to entertain them, but I come first as a priest —to talk about Our Lord —and secondly as an entertainer." "Sing unto the Lord a new song; sing praises lustily unto Him with a good courage!" (Psalrn 33) Father Mitchell and the Canterbury Choir do just that on this, "THE AMERICAN FOLK-SONG MASS."
