By that Monday morning when she was placed in Paris’s Pere Lachaise cemetery, every Piaf recording in every shop in Paris had been bought up by bereaved Piaf fans. The Foreign Legion sent a floral tribute. Maurice Chevalier’s flowers were inscribed, simply, “Sleep well, brave big little one’’ Jean Cocteau, whose own death followed Piaf’s by a mere six hours, said, “Her great voice will not be lost!’ One need not seek far for the secret of the impact of this artist upon her own country and the world. The Piaf voice was an unequalled instrument for the expression of the entire range of human emotion. There is excitement in its merest whisper. At fuller volume, it communicates everything from lusty power to ribald humor, and from the depths of human misery to the exaltation of romance. The “little sparrow” of France grew up in the streets of Paris and knew at first hand the hard luck and heartbreak she sang about in her songs. These things she translated with rare artistry into an astonishing series of deeply compelling recorded performances. This album is a one-volume collection of outstanding worldwide favorites from that great treasury of Piaf recordings. Album produced for the U.S.A, by DAVE DEXTER, JR.
