Jerusalem — crowned with hymns and prayers, songs of yearning and songs of battle on its walls. Its people sang when they dwelt in the city before it was laid waste; they sang in exile, never forgetting it, bearing it always in their hearts; pilgrims sang when they visited it, in joy and trembling and tears, kissing its sun-scorched stones; Jews sang when they returned to stay, standing on the peak of Scopus after centuries of dreaming. And a new song of our time has been added to the age-old songs of Jerusalem: "Jerusalem the Golden" — which was sung at the Temple Wall by battle-weary para- troopers on the day when Jerusalem became one city, "a city that is compact together." This record, which is issued in Jerusalem, Capital of Israel, is designed to be a musical emissary from the Land of Israel ot the Diaspora, so that these songs may be heard by Jews wherever they may be. We hope that those who near it will join in and sing together with the singers — and go on singing the songs of Jerusalem by themselves: in the family circle, in the schools, in the youth movements, and on the road to Jerusalem.
