We feel proud and lucky to have obtained this original work that somehow, through the years escaped the record press. “The Shenandoah Valley Quartet’’ was formed by Smilin’ Jim Eanes while working as an entertainer and announcer at radio station W.H.E.E. at Martinsville, Virginia. After several hit records with the Decca label, Jim returned to Martinsville to start his own radio show, “The Corn Bread Matinee,” with alive show 1 until 1:30each day. The Shenandoah ValleyQuartet was formed from a fantastic line-up of musicians. Jim organized the group and called it “The Shenandoah Valley Boys.” The late Roy Russell played fiddle while Arnold Terry was on the bass and guitar. The great Allen Shelton picked the banjo and Jim played guitar. The group did instrumentals to perfection and had a harmony blend not found in many of today’s quartets. While doing the radio show, the quartet became very popular and received numerous requests for quartet songs. From this response came the idea of recording an album to be released on the Starday label in Nashville. Thirteen songs were recorded in the studios of W.H.E.E. Radio in Martinsville, around 1959, but the master tape somehow never found it’s way to Starday. The original Shenandoah Valley Quartet is not to be confused with The Shenandoah Valley Quartet organized several years ago by Red Smiley’s Bluegrass Cutups. The New Shenan- doah Valley Quartet came about as a result of Jim’s working with The Bluegrass Cutups after Red Smiley’s retirement. By combining the two names “The Shenandoah Valley Boys” and the “Bluegrass Cutups.” The Shenandoah Cutups was the new name used from which came The Shenandoah Valley Quartet. A fine album by this group is featured on Country Records Album #726. We feel the originaTShehandoah Valley Quartet had something very different in quartet harmony. It’s ’ rd to explain, r but by listening to this album you will very quickly hear what we’rr after an < f/o-year delay ... it is 2QSQ& ______________________« A ~ - .J^nt^fxtfe--3nly they knew how!
