I think it’s because I know that what goes into the microphones, through the complex tangle of wires and tubes onto the recording tape and then finally gets etched into the surface of that piece of record vinyl has a frightening aura of permanence about it. When the phonograph record manufacturer advertises “Unbreakable,” he really means it. Although the song has been sung hundreds of times before ... and will undoubtedly be performed hundreds of times after. . . it’s that performance . . . captured in the dark quietness of the hushed recording studio that is recorded . . . trapped in vinyl for all to hear and analyze forever. . . a record is really fora long, longtime. This album represents a bit of gospel music history ... the moment when an exciting new gospel group — already proven a success by the enthusiastic reception of gospel music fans in their early major personal appearances — first committed themselves to that frightening permanent experience ... the recording session. The Downings are a new gospel group — but new in name only because the individual members each bring to the group a wealth of gospel singing background, love and experience. Paul Downing, manager and bass singer, formerly sang with the Dixie Echoes, Ann Sanders Downing sang with the Speer Family for several years, Greg Gordon was a member of the Chuck Wagon Gang, and Sue Ellen Chenault, the group’s youngest member, was a Miss Arkansas Pageant finalist. The musicians were ready . . . the studio was quiet. . . the singers were in place . . . the producer's voice came over the loudspeaker, "Ready on the Downings . . . TAKE ONE." That moment was the start. . . this exciting record album is the result... of those recording sessions... You’ll like these folks... you’ll really enjoy their special kind of gospel singing — sometimes “old-time gospel” sung with great gusto and honesty — sometimes contemporary Christian songs sung with urgency and conviction . . . you’ll be happy to know that TAKE ONE is just the beginning.
