The second album release on Motown (Tamla started two years earlier)was an attempt to capitalize on the Twist craze. This "group" was probably the same session musicians who had earlier cut a single on Tamla as the Swinging Tigers. Sax players Thomas "Bean" Bowles and Ron Wakefield played prominent roles in these unsuccessful ventures. Two tracks "Twist Ala B.G." (Berry Gordy), and "Twisting Ales Style," name for Barney Ales (promotions) suggests a manufactured or studio group. Motown released two singles by the Twistin' Kings "White House Twist/Christmas Twist" (11/27/61), and "Congo Twist Parts 1 & 2" (12/18/61) - a little more than two weeks apart, both flopped. The tracks are similar except for the titles and the honky tonk sax sound is prominent throughout.

In the early days of the Tamla/Motown coming empire, the first album (LP) released under the Motown logo was Mary Wells' Bye Bye Baby I Don't Want To Take A Chance (Motown MLP 600) in 1961. But with finances an ever-present concern, Berry Gordy et al made an unabashed foray into the Twist craze (even Frank Sinatra got into the act at Capitol with Everybody's Twistin') with their second album, Twistin' The World Around by The Twistin' Kings (Motown MLP 601) that same year.

In reality, The Twistin' Kings were really the label's resident house band, The Funk Brothers, led by pianist Joe Hunter and which, at various times, included saxophonists Ron Wakefield and Thomas "Bean" Bowles, James Jamerson on bass guitar, trombonist Paul Riser, percussionist Eddie "Bongo" Brown, guitarists Joe Messina, Robert White and Eddie Willis, drummers Benny "Papa Zita" Benjamin and Richard "Pistol" Allen, Jack Ashford on tambourine (also percussionist, vibraphonist and marimba player), and pianist Earl Van Dyke who took over from Hunter in 1964. This collection of musicians would have a hand in many of Motown Corporation's biggest hits over the years. There is some suggestion that they also functioned as The Swinging Tigers over on Tamla.

Who the vocalists are is anyone's guess.

There were even two singles released from the LP as by The Twistin' Kings - Xmas Twist/White House Twist (Motown 1022), and Congo - Part 1/Congo - Part 2 (Motown 1023) in November and December 1961 respectively.

Neither single, nor the album, made any impact on the respective charts at the time, but today that original LP is a highly sought after disc.

·                                                                                                                      CONDITION:

·                                                                                                                      THE RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)         WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant). For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)         The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)         Stereo copies of this album are NOT known to exist.

(d)         Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 THE COVER

THE COVER IS STILL IN ITS ORIGINAL ►SHRINK WRAP;  HOWEVER, WE ARE UNABLE TO GRADE IT NEAR MINT DUE TO MINOR FLAWS LISTED BELOW; WE GRADE THIS COVER AS EXCELLENT OR VG++ (A PIECE OF SHRINK WRAP IS MISSING)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-       Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3

-       Back cover has a few yellowish dust speckles scattered here and there (these tiny spots are not overly obtrusive or distracting, but they do cover about 40% of the surface)

-       Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.

-       Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine   (nothing significant)

NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE  COVER
