Side One I See a Village Old Bachelor Uncle Nimra The Cossack Little Onion Look to the Sky Rise, Beautiful Sun Song of the Barge Haulers Side Two * A Village Lies Yonder I Shall Walk outside the Gates and High River Banks Fair Tresses Along the Peterskaya Road The Sea has Spread Wide and Afar Song of Peace Young Heroes I See a Village is a song from Galicia dating back to the early days of the Revolution. It tells of the gallant heroes of the Ukrainian Army of Liberation Old Bachelor. The 'Old Bachelor' sings his mock tale of woe at being unable to find a suitable bride. However, he is not easily pleased and is quick to voice his objections to taking a young wife, an old wife, a pretty wife, a plain wife, a clever wife, a simple wife, a rich wife, or a poor wife, in fact suggest any kind of wife and he will be sure to find some reason for not marrying her. Uncle Nimra. The drunkard Uncle Nimra sings of the delights of Vodka. The Cossack. This is one of the many boisterous Cossack songs. Here we are told of his jolly life and how he revels in his merry making; singing lustily, dancing the famous Cossack dances, and of course drinking heavily. Little Onion. A young man meets the girl of his dreams whilst shopping in the local market for spring onions. Surely the most romantic version yet of the 'Boy Meets Girl' theme ? Look to the Sky. The 19th Century Ukrainian poet and painter Taras Swezczenko was the author of many rebellious poems condemning such injustices as slavery. He was eventually punished by being conscripted for 30 years and forbidden to write or paint. This song is a setting of one of his verses: I sit and I look to the sky And wonder why I'm not the Falcon. If I could fly, I would fly Home to Ukrania. Rise Beautiful Sun. This is an old folk song from the Steppes of Russia. It simply expresses the joys of sunrise and warm sunny days in the countryside. Song of the Barge Haulers. The steady rhythm of this worksong suggests the regular heaving as the barge haulers strain at the tow ropes of their barges. A Village Lies Yonder is a light hearted song about romance in a small country village. I Shall Walk Outside the Gates. A love-sick girl takes a walk into the countryside. She lingers by a lakeside observing a pike catching his prey. She herself idly trails a net through the water and catches a goldfish, but throws it back, lamenting that her sweetheart cannot be caught so easily. Fair Tresses. A love-sick young man this time I He sings of the beauty of his beloved. Along the Peterskaya Road. A young man journeying along the Peterskaya Road sings nonsense rhymes about his girl, to the accompanying jingle of the bells on the harnesses of the horses. The Sea has Spread Wide and Afar. This new version of the traditional song could equally have been entitled 'The Stoker’s Lament', as it tells of a ship's stoker kept hard at work by his unsympathetic captain even though he is seriously ill. As he feels death approaching, he gazes across the sea thinking of the home he'll never see again and of his mother awaiting his return in vain. Song of Peace. This most beautiful song is a powerful plea to us all for peace, imploring us to take good care of the world. Young Heroes. The Young Heroes are the Cossacks. They would charge into battle whooping, and whistling, and singing war songs such as this. Boulevard Records are made in England and pressed by Allied Records Ltd., 326 Kensal Road, London, W.io.
