A great album from 1961, Zoot with Henri Renaud, piano, Bob Whitlock, bass, and Jean-Louis Viale, drums., Paris December 1961. .Zoot is on brilliant, relaxed form with his distinct tenor tone working wonders on all numbers from zoot's blues to stomping at the savoy . I really like " You go to my Head" and "on The Alamo" . There is a good review of this cd in Jazz Journal, May ' 13 by Dave Gelly, I agree with every word . A good recording as well! If you are a Zoot fan or new to good swinging tenor sax - Buy It!.

(EXCERPT FROM AN ANONYMOUS ONLINE REVIEW)

Zoot Sims is the quintessential improviser and a master of the art of tenor sax-playing. His laid-back style has always been much admired by musicians and public alike and really just about anything recorded by him is worth the investment. In this rendition he fronts a French rhythm section of relatively modest accomplishments, but it is his efforts which capture the imagination and make the session memorable and eminently listenable. His ability to breeze through standards, blues and anything else which takes his fancy is sublime and thing of joy and beauty.

The first Zoot Sims I've got in my collection. A terrifically melodic and easy to listen to (without being easy listening) Tenor Sax player, backed for the most part by a French trio. My reason for only giving 4 stars is the French Pianist, who is fine as a accompanist, but his solos I find rather weak and at times cliched. But Zoot Sims is in great form gliding through solos with effortless invention. On ballads he sounds a bit like Ben Webster sometimes, but he his just as capable of the odd distorted squeak to keep you interested. Although this advertised as being live, reading the sleeve notes it seems there is actually a good chance it was recorded in the studio.

·                          CONDITION:

·                          THE RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)         WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++. A few light abrasions  ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly  insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)         The record has an "ear" symbol (a pretzel-like engravure about 1/4-inch/6mm long) in the trail-off vinyl, which on SOME  jazz and blues labels (such as Blue Note; Folkways; Period, etc…) is associated with very early or first pressings). The 'ear' symbol is actually a letter 'P' in italic script, denoting a pressing made by Plastylite Corporation’s pressing plant.

(d)         Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                          THE COVER

THE COVER IS NEAR MINT !

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-       Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging (BARELY VISIBLE)

-       Cover has one corner slightly dinged (BARELY VISIBLE)

NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE  COVER
