COMMENTS :

Liverpool Today "Where It All Began"
(US Capitol ST-2544 Stereo) 1966
Live at The Cavern
Earl Preston's Realms, The Richmond Group,
The Michael Allen Group

By 1965, the club had built its own recording studio, Cavern Sound, which was run by Nigel Greenberg and Peter Hepworth. This was the first fully
equipped recording studio in Liverpool, and they recorded a country single with Phil Brady and the Ranchers, a rag week EP featuring the
Roadrunners, and the Ember album,

Liverpool Today – Live At The Cavern,
which was a showcase for the performers with the club’s agency, Cavern
Artistes. Unfortunately, the Cavern was expanding too fast and the bailiffs took possession in February 1966.
The Cavern’s DJ Bob Wooler and audience reaction were added to simulate a live recording on Liverpool Today

The key group was Earl Preston’s Realms:
their lead vocalist, the good-looking Earl Preston (known to his friends as Joey Spruce) had previously fronted the TTs and recorded for Fontana. Earl
Preston was a very good vocalist (still is – I saw him about six months ago) and he formed the Realms, which included organ and
saxophone and had Tommy Kelly on drums, who had a madcap personality like Freddie Starr’s. Three of their five songs were covers: Marvin Gaye’s U
S hit written by Smokey Robinson, “I’ll Be Doggone”, Fats Domino’s “Blue Monday” with a ska beat, and Derek Martin’s “Daddy Rolling Stone”, which had been the B-side of the Who’s second single, “Anyway Anyhow Anywhere”. They performed two of Joey’s original songs, “Missing You” and “Nobody But You”. The group also recorded for Fontana (“Raindrops”, 1964) and CBS (“Hard Time Lovin’ You”, 1966). Seventeen-year-old Michael Allen performed “Telegram”, which had been the B-side of Georgie Fame’s hit, “In The Meantime”. He revived the Soul Sisters’ “I Can’t Stand It”, which had been the first chart entry for the Spencer Davis Group in 1964, Jimmy Witherspoon’s “Eve nin’”, and Burt Bacharach’s “Trains And Boats And Planes”, which had been a chart hit for Billy J Kramer. Michael Allen left for London and, as far as I know, never recorded again.

The Richmond Group was a six piece R&B band from the city, which had two strong lead vocalists, Dave Kerrigan and Eddie Cave. Eddie Cave was
at his best on Bo Diddley’s humorous “Cops And Robbers”, and “I’m All Right” was another Diddley song. “I Won’t Let You Down” was a group original while “That’s Alright” had been a single written and recorded by Jimmy Powell in 1964. In “I Shall Not Be Moved”, they sing “Just because my skin is black”, but the group was totally white. Dave Kerrigan formed a new band, the Signs and the Times, while Eddie Cave fronted with the Fyx, which
recorded for Pye.

The album was also released in the States as Liverpool Today – Where It All Began (Capitol ST 2544) with three songs deleted (“Nobody But You”,
“I Shall Not Be Moved” and “I Won’t Let You Down”). Liverpool Today
is a telling artefact, giving us a feel of the Cavern in the 1960s. The music is raucous and exciting
