Scarce and sought-after funk/reggae LP by Zimbabwe's Thomas Mapfumo and the Blacks. This rare Rough Trade one has a picture label, not the more common plain one.

Thomas is one of the most major performers from Zimbabwe. During the civil war of the 1970s he was one of the first artists to take pride in Shona music. In 1979 he was arrested by the white settler regime of Ian Smith for singing songs that were considered rebellious. The government banned his records from the state-controlled radio and threw him into a prison camp without charges. After the country’s independence he was harshly treated by ZANU, the new ruling party, but has always remained fiercly independent, criticizing corruption and abuse of power under the new regime. A decade after independence his album ‘Corruption’ critisized the Mugabe government, and once again Thomas became the target of government harassment with his music banned again from the main stations.
