Singer, guitarist, harmonica player and songwriter Matthew "Dutch" Tilders (b.1939) has been one of Australia's foremost blues and roots performers since the 1960s. He is one of the many prominent Australian musicians who came to this country during the era of post-WWII migration; as his nickname implies, Dutch was born in the Netherlands in 1941, and came to Australia with his parents, four brothers and a sister in 1955.

During the late seventies, Dutch fronted renowned blues and boogie bands including The Elks, the Cyril B. Bunter Band and Mickey Finn. In 1979 Dutch made Australian recording history with his next LP, which was recorded using the direct-to-disc process. It featured Jim Conway, saxophonist Bob Bertles (The Meteors) and bassist Peter Howell. In 1980 he formed the 'R&B Six', a band that included Charley Elul (drums), Peter Frazer (sax), Suzanne Petersen (flute and vocals), Mick Eliot (guitar) and Dave Murray (bass and vocals). This band toured Australia extensively. Dutch also worked solo and toured as support for visiting greats like John Mayall, Taj Mahal, Brownie McGhee and Sonny Terry. Also in 1980 Dutch cut his second direct-to-disc LP, The Blues Had A Baby, recorded with The Kevin Borich Express, plus Bob Bertles; the single "Bad books / "The blues had a baby" was released in April 1981.

In May 2010 Tilders' manager, Lynne Wright, announced that he had been diagnosed with oesophageal and liver cancer (although incorrectly reported in the media to be lung cancer). Tilders wrote and recorded "Going on a Journey" after learning of his diagnosis, it became the title track of his final album. In July that year a benefit concert was held with a line up of Tilders, Chain, Kevin Borich Express, Chris Finnen, Steve Russell, Geoff Achison, Lloyd Spiegel, Stevie Page, and Jeannie Lushes Band. He retired from performing in January the following year due to the illness and ongoing treatment.

On 23 April 2011 Matthew "Dutch" Tilders died, aged 69. Tilders was dubbed the "Godfather of Blues" in Australia, he is survived by two sons and four siblings. Suzanne Petersen issued "Fine as Wine" in July 2011 as a tribute to Tilders. In May 2012 Australian Guitar magazine listed Tilders in the top 40 on their Definitive Australian Guitarists of All Time.

There are a number of reasons as to why it is that the critically acclaimed folk/blues singer Margret RoadKnight is not known to the Australian public on a higher level. She’s managed to sustain a career over 50 years, yet she’s not a pop singer for one and secondly she has never followed musical fashions. In fact, she called her 1981 album Out of Fashion… Not Out of Style.

Perhaps closer to the point is that RoadKnight is a masterful interpreter of other people’s songs so she has never made an impact as a songwriter in her own right. Yet her strength as a performer lies in her remarkable ability to ingest her own personality into the songs she sings. Add to that her soaring voice – which has been likened to those of Bessie Smith or Nina Simone – and imposing presence and you start to get to grips with what makes RoadKnight such a commanding performer.
