Leeds & Catlin Records: A History and Discography

American Record Co. • Hawthorne & Sheble •
International Record Co.: Histories and Discographies

These rogue companies were persistent thorns in Victor's and Columbia's sides in the early 1900s, infringing their patents and often undercutting their prices. Ultimately they were vanquished by the courts, but not before having produced many intriguing (and often now-rare) records that are favorites with collectors. Their histories and recorded output are examined in detail for the first time in these unique new volumes, which contain a tremendous amount of previously unpublished data. Save $11 when you order the set of two (individual volumes are $45 each on Mainspring website).

Data compiled by William R. Bryant
Edited and annotated by Allan Sutton

This special combined volume covers three short-lived record producers of the early 1900s. All known issues on client and subsidiary labels are covered — U.S. as well as foreign, even including American Record's British releases and the post-production Nipponophone reissues. The Hawthorne & Sheble (Star) listing also includes discographical data on the renumbered Columbia masters from which they were pressed.

Dozens of rare labels are covered, including American Record Company, American Odeon Record, Albaugh Brothers, Busy Bee, The Buckeye, Clico, Excelsior, Faultless Concert Record, IRC generics, Lyric, Mozart, and Star, among numerous others. Each self-contained section includes a detailed discography, illustrated company history, and artist and title indexes.
