"LENNY
PICKETT is one of the most phenomenal, widely and wildly talented
saxophone players of his generation. Self-taught, with a
relentlessly soulful approach, a deep understanding and transcendent
melding of so many Afro, world, blues, jazz, funk and roots with a very
free, instinctual feel for putting it all together here into something
not only new, but groundbreaking. He also possesses a beautiful musical
mind and a highly original, bracing, compelling, distinctive voice.
Growing
up in Berkeley CA, he initially gained fame with TOWER OF POWER.
Pickett changed coasts in the 1980's and became a fixture of the
downtown New York City avant-garde that centered around the performing
space known as the Kitchen and that featured musicians like Peter
Gordon, Ned Sublette, and Rhys Chatham. he later went on to be the
bandleader for Saturday Night Live (SNL).
His several hundred recording and performing credits include work with artists from Talking Heads to David
Bowie, Allen Ginsberg, Paul McCartney, William S.
Burroughs, Philip Glass, Ravi Shankar, Brooklyn Funk Essentials, Grace
Jones, Nona Hendryx, The Meters, Buddy Guy, John Lee Hooker, Aaron Neville, Lucky
Peterson, Black Uhuru, Laurie Anderson, Little Feat, to even Mariah Carey and Mick Jagger.
On top of all of this, he is a professor in the Jazz Studies department
at New York University, and, when his schedule permits, performs
clinics and concerts worldwide."

No
wonder Lenny Pickett's own records are so far and few between, but when
he drops one it's a mind-blowing experience. He has exactly 2 albums
under his own name, this phenomenal "BORNEO HORNS", from 1987 and "THE
PRESCRIPTION" from 2014.
THE BORNEO HORNS is the only one of those ever released (long out of print) on VINYL.
(and it's the one you really want.)
All of these strangely different vectors (particularly the Funk and the Spiritual Free Jazz) are channeled into one uncommonly powerful, eccentric, deliriously,
playfully and seriously funky album here - with soulful, quirky primal
beats underpinning the diverse horns and reeds in a thick,
mystery-laden terrain of sounds from another world, replete with dense
jungles and dark, dangerous urban back alleys. No electronics on this LP
btw, should the previous statement suggest that.
Despite this being Pickett's first album as a leader, he chose to emphasize his vision and writing abilities
over and beyond his ferocious technique as a player. These grooving,
expansive, propulsive, bracing tracks are a true revelation ...a record you can listen to again & again and still not hear it all.
A very scarce record, not to be missed
...there's nothing else like it, not even close
Disc inside anti-static poly inner sleeve.

LP is kept in a protective, clear poly outer-sleeve
