Each volume includes all confirmed U.S. issues on Pathé, Perfect, and related labels (including Apollo, the Plaza-ARC group, the Cameo group, Davega, Music Hour, Music Service Co., Silvertone, Starck, Supertone, and many others); master numbers (including those from outside sources) and takes; alternate versions; release dates (plus recording dates, when verifiable from reliable primary-source documentation, such as the Ed Kirkeby logs and surviving Pathé Form 19 cards); composer and show credits; accompaniments; artist pseudonyms, and other details. The convenient format uses a separate line for every issue, eliminating annoying footnotes.

Volume 2 corrects numerous errors found in previous jazz and dance-band discographies (particularly in regard to the Plaza-ARC and Cameo co-releases), based upon painstaking visual inspection and synchronized aural comparisons of the original discs carried out by the Record Research Associates. Carried out over the course of several decades, this material appears here in print for the first time.

Volume I also includes a detailed, illustrated, and fully documented history of the American Pathé operation, from its launch in January 1912 through its acquisition by the American Record Corporation in 1929. Both volumes include complete title and artist indexes.
