SHAKE YOUR MONEY MAKER
1990's Shake Your Money Maker is the breakout debut album from The Black Crowes and the brothers Robinson named after Elmore James' classic blues number of the same name. Issued on Rick Rubin's Def American Recordings and produced by George Drakoulias, the throwback 10-song set is awash in vocal swagger and guitar hooks, heavily and unabashedly influenced by the band's '70s idols like The Rolling Stones, Faces and Aerosmith. Featuring the two #1 hit singles with "She Talks To Angels" and their cover of Otis Redding's "Hard to Handle," not to mention fan favorites and charting singles "Jealous Again" and "Twice As Hard," Shake Your Money Maker shot to the top five on the Billboard 200 and the band into the limelight!
THE SOUTHERN HARMONY AND MUSICAL COMPANION
Following up a breakout album like 1990's Shake Your Money Maker and runaway singles like "She Talks To Angels" and "Hard to Handle," is no easy task but The Black Crowes managed that and then some with 1992's The Southern Harmony & Musical Companion. Once again enlisting producer George Drakoulias and augmenting the line-up with new lead guitarist Marc Ford, their fine-tuned sophomore set for Rick Rubin's Def American produced no less than four hit singles with "Remedy," "Thorn in My Pride," "Sting Me" and "Hotel Illness," rising to the #1 spot on the Billboard 200 in the process.
AMORICA
Released on Rick Rubin's American Recordings in 1994, Amorica is the Black Crowes' third full-length and follow-up to the band's two breakout albums Shake Your Money Maker (1990) and The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion (1992). Produced by Jack Joseph Puig, the 11-song set may not have the runaway hits of its predecessors, but it stands as one of the band's best overall collections. The group's jammy blues-rock sound, anchored by throwback frontman Chris Robinson and the killer guitar riffs from his brother Rich and Marc Ford, is as fully realized as ever, an ideal modern mix of their heart on sleeve '70s influences.
THREE SNAKES AND ONE CHARM
The Black Crowes fourth full-length, Three Snakes And One Charm was originally released on Rick Rubin's American Recordings in 1996 and follows-up 1994's Amorica. Produced by the band with Jack Joseph Puig, Three Snakes And One Charm is the third and final album with lead guitarist Marc Ford and it features a divergent sound that is less hook oriented and more free-flowing than its predecessors. Distinct in the Black Crowes' catalog, frontman Chris Robinson stated that while "Shake Your Money Maker might be more of a Friday night album, this one is more of a Sunday afternoon."
