Miles Davis Filles de Kilimanjaro on numbered limited edition 180-gram 45 RPM 2 LP from Mobile Fidelity
Landmark 1968 effort recognized as Davis' Prelude into
full-on fusion: exotic suite-like album — beautiful, intense,
adventurous!
Miles Davis' move into full-on fusion starts here. Abandoning his
bebop roots and chasing electric dreams, rock-based rhythms, and
ostinato pulses, the icon gives life to new music forms on Filles de Kilimanjaro,
a titanic release prized for its historical significance and lasting
beauty. Grounded and focused, the five compositions unfold like a
unified suite. Such peak lyricism, flourishes, and phrases are
experienced in the highest-possible fidelity on Mobile Fidelity's 45 RPM
double LP set.
Indeed, the exotic sound, touch, and feel of the songs on Filles de Kilimanjaro
are as crucial as the melodies. To that extent, listeners can now enjoy
the expressive tonalities and lush colors from each instrument in
full-range glory. Voicings, harmonics, and pitches are rendered with
exquisite detail. The manners in which the textures and phrases rotate
what seems like a unified tonal center places you at the original
recording sessions, executed in July and September 1968.
The final appearance of Davis' classic second quintet bears fruit on
three of the record's cuts, including the title track and R&B-tinted
"Frelon Brun." Sparked with restrained funk, driving grooves, and
bluesy accents, Filles de Kilimanjaro maintains an instinctive
flow and controlled fredom that permit Davis to oversee an innovative
blending of alterations, improvisation, and cycles. Comprised of
multiple sections, "Petits Machins" is a lesson in perfectly played
melodic complexity, with chromatic riffs, dominant chords, syncopated
progressions, and switching meters forming a singular mosaic.
Filles de Kilimanjaro also represents a jumping-off point
for Davis' lineup. For the September sessions, Chick Corea replaced
Herbie Hancock while Dave Holland relieved Ron Carter. The new additions
speak a different albeit common language, fitting in with Davis' desire
to draw from rock and weave funk into open-minded excursions filled
with exoticism, soulfulness, and wonder.

GRADING. Grading is
visual only unless otherwise stated. I go by Goldmine standards and try to be
conservative. I will play grade on certain items only - it is just impossible
for me to play grade everything I put on EBAY.
RECORD GRADING:
MINT
(M) ---- It should be SEALED and appear to be brand new. Mint means STILL SEALED, NEVER PLAYED. NEAR MINT (NM or NM-) ---- OPENED or UNSEALED. Otherwise mint but has one or two tiny
inconsequential flaws that do not affect play. Covers should be close to
perfect with minor signs of wear or age just becoming evident.
VERY GOOD PLUS (VG++ or strong VG++ or VG+++) The record or cover
that all but the most particular collector would say looks outstanding.
Cover may have insignificant manufacturers defect such as notch hole or
cut corner.
VERY GOOD PLUS (VG+ or strong VG+) The record has been handled and
played infrequently or very carefully. On a disc, there may be light
paper scuffs from sliding in and out of a sleeve or the vinyl or some of
the original luster may be lost. A slight scratch that did not affect
play would be acceptable for most collectors. Cover has most of its
original gloss and has been well taken care of. Minor seam splits may
be acceptable.
VERY GOOD (VG or strong VG) ---- Record displays visible signs of
handling and playing, such as loss of vinyl luster, light surface
scratches, groove wear and spindle trails. Some audible surface noise,
non-feelable marks that might or will affect the sound as mild
occasional surface noise or periodic pops/clicks. Usually a cover is VG
when one or more of these problems are evident: ring wear, seam splits,
bent corners, loss of gloss, stains, etc.
VERY GOOD- (VG- or G+)
Record will show signs same as VG with heavier wear including noticeable
groove wear and feelable marks that will likely pop or click. Popping
or clicking will be most evident through quieter passages. Record
should play all the way through, but may skip.
GOOD (G) ---- Well
played with little luster and significant surface noise. Despite
defects, record should still play all the way through without skipping,
but may skip. Several cover flaws will be apparent, but should not
obliterate the artwork. Filler copy until a better one can be found.
POOR
(P) ---- Any record or cover that does not qualify for the above "Good"
grading should be seen as Poor. Only the rarest of records should ever
be graded as Poor while the others should go to the trash heap.
DISCLAIMER. Due to
the number of frivolous
returns which were
unwarranted, and due to the
nature of sound recorded products that can be easily
copied, there will no
longer be a free return policy. I will charge a
$10.00 return fee for
all returns - this amount will be deducted
from the Paypal refund of the returned
item.
If item is truly
defective the entire purchase
amount
will be refunded as
long as the item is in the same condition as it was sent.
