_______________________________________

We grade 78s and cylinders very conservatively, based on the VJM scale. Grading is visual. Actual sound quality may be slightly better or worse than the visual grade suggests, depending on such factors as the quality of the pressing material, characteristics of your playback system, and the proper matching of stylus to groove width (which can vary widely on records of this period; a mismatched stylus can make even a perfect copy sound bad).

E+ = A prime copy, with full shine and no audible signs of use. As close to “mint” as 78s and cylinders come.

E  = Still very shiny, near-new looking. Only faint, inaudible to barely audible traces of wear, with no audible scuffs or scratches unless noted.

E– = Still shiny but with a trace of audible needle wear. May have a few short, very light scuffs or scratches.

V+ = Moderate shine with light, even wear and no stressed groves. May have a few audible scuffs or scratches. Noise is apparent but not overly distracting, with sound still strong and no significant loss of detail. Still a decent copy overall.

V = Worn but still listenable. May have some stressed grooves and audible scuffs or scratches. Some loss of detail, with noise distracting but not overwhelming.

G = Gray throughout. Still playable, but with high noise level and noticeable loss of detail. May have some stressed grooves and audible scratches. Generally not listed, except for rare items that may be difficult to find in better condition.

F / P = Heavily worn or damaged, produces listenable sound only if noted.

GUARANTEE: We guarantee all records to be in the visual grade stated. Actual sound quality may vary as noted above, and is not covered by this guarantee. Returns are accepted only for misgraded items and must be postmarked within 14 days of our shipping date. Return postage reimbursement is limited to actual shipping cost at US Postal Service Media Mail Rate; buyer pays any amount above that rate. To avoid cherry-picking, lots must be returned in their entirety (i.e., no returns of  individual items from lot sales).
