(..1969....) by ( SHAG )...... ....( This Milwaukee, Wisconsin band are best remembered by their 1967 psychedelic 45 "Stop & Listen." What is not known about them is their 1969 studio recordings made at Pacific High Recorders in San Francisco. Shag layed down some excellent tracks during down time at the studio while the Grateful Dead were finishing up "Workingman's Dead." Tracks from Shag's "1969" have never been released and their use of the flute a full two years ahead of Jethro Tull's popularization of the instrument shows their versatility and raw talent. a fan says: The year is 1969, the band is from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Music? Strong dose of psychedelic (or acid), plus progressive a-la Jethro Tull, with flute (Gypsies in the Forest), pretty heavy hard tock (Mad Hatter), solid mainstream standards, meditative guitar solo - on the same level as Santana's Abraxas (Lovely Lady). Vocals more towards high register, somehow reminding freewheeling Mark Farner, but without screeching. All songs are originals, no covers, musicianship is excellent, rich and unusual harmonies. The band is totally genuine, because "Jethro Tull" released "This Was" in 1968 (it was a flop), and only "Stand Up" (1969) went to the top of the charts, but by that time "Shag" was already recording this album in the studio, and the same year appeared on the same bill with Led Zeppelin, Blind Faith, Joe Cocker AND Jethro Tull at the Midwest Rock Festival. So, I don't think that its fair to talk seriously about the influence of Jethro Tull. The music is sad and rebellous - this is the end of the Summer of Love, and a step into escapism of prog and psychedelia of the 70s. Before becoming "Shag" as we know it, the band released several singles for a local label and for Capitol Records - I would have been happy to see them as bonus tracks on this re-issue. "Shag" struggled for several years before finally disbanding in 1971. This studio album* remained forgotten and not released until 2005 (which proves again that the executives of the major labels have less brains than musial critics), and this is one of the most successful projects of Gear Fab. The more you listen to it, the more attached to it you become * Too often it is mentioned (as a major achievement) that "Shag" recorded these tracks in the same studio as "Gratedul Dead", and at the same time as record sessions of "Working Man's Dead" Workingman's Dead - gimme a break. "Shag" is far better, and easily leaves "Grateful" for what it is A1 Riddle A2 Gypsies In The Forest A3 Cold Duck Wino A4 Anyone's Song B1 Mad Hatter B2 Lavendar Tab Ooh Dilly Dilly B3 Lovely Lady )........
