How I Grade
Visually under a strong light, and I pre-play all of what I offer for sale. If a record has noticeable background noise I will note it. Photos of records may have glare, or reflections of the camera, although I try to keep them to a minimum.
Mint - I will not use this unless record is still sealed.
Near Mint - I hesitate to use this grade as I don't consider myself expert enough but if a record looks brand new to me and plays well, I will.
NM covers would have to be practically
flawless.
Excellent - Has obviously been played but not quite Near Mint
Excellent covers - only 1 or 2 very minor defects.
Very Good Plus - Obviously a record that was well taken care of, high sheen, may have some slight signs of wear, scuffs, very light scratches, still plays well, very little, if any, background noise. Center hole in good shape. Label does not have writing, tape, or tape residue on it.
VG+ covers will have only minor defects, I always try to indicate them in my description.
Very Good - Can't quite make it into VG+, some obvious signs of wear, light scratches, scuffs, noticeable background noise, may have writing, tape, or tape residue on label. Too many of these defects and it will not qualify as VG.
VG covers may show some ring wear, have one or more corners scrunched, or have beginnings of splitting at seams.
Good + - I won't usually list these unless I think they have some redeeming value, such as being relatively scarce.
So, as you can see, the majority of my listings I would consider to be VG or VG+. Also it is entirely possible to have different grades for the record than the picture sleeve/cover, i.e. the record might be VG+ or NM while the picture sleeve/cover is only VG or vice versa.
