SILVER LEAF ACETATE

Condition / Grade: E-

A one-of-a-kind acetate that includes unreleased recordings on the B-side of my dad, Sam Firk, playing together with John Fahey, who recorded together on Joe Bussard's Fonotone label as The Mississippi Swampers. I presume it was recorded circa 1962 or 1963, like the Fonotone material. Unlike the Fonotone material, this is a 10" 33RPM acetate, and I was told it was produced by Dick Spottswood in Silver Spring, MD. Edit: It may have been recorded at Sandy Fisher's house in Annapolis, MD, the same place John Hurt's album for Spottswood's Piedmont label was recorded. Unconfirmed!

Each side has 3 tracks with a runtime of about 9 minutes per side - mostly versions of Mississippi John Hurt songs. Edit: The last track on side B appears to be an early version of the song "Stomping Tonight on the Pennsylvania / Alabama Border" which appears on Fahey's 2nd record, "Death Chants...", on Takoma. The sound is a bit uneven and hissy but tolerable. A small flake of the surface material has come off on the Sam Firk solo side, but it does not reach to the recorded content. There is a tiny needle hop in the first Sam Firk song as well - I had to adjust my tonearm and needle quite a few times to get it to play without the tiny hop, but eventually succeeded.

I'm not sure what to ask for compensation for this, offers are welcome - now that I have it recorded, I'd love to see it go to someone who can care for it properly, rather than sit in my basement, forgotten in a box, while it deterioriates!
