Just recently I bought a massive collection of 60's and 70's LPs...some are in surprisingly immaculate condition, and some are not, but the original owner (a well-respected Australian vinyl hoarder) was a fastidious collector of the styles he loved - 60's beat/punk/garage, British invasion well-knowns [Beatles/Hollies/Dave Clark 5/Gerry & The Pacemakers/Zombies/Troggs/Rolling Stones, etc..], 70's West Coast sounds, pop-psych and he'd obviously forraged far and wide since there's a flurry of unique South American, New Zealand,Taiwanese, South African, Japanese releases amongst them all.
Here then, is one of the LPs from his collection:
ARTIST: The ROLLING STONES -
SIDE 1: PLAY 260106-B DB MAXICUT!
'Studio 301' (at 301 Castlereagh St., city) held EMI's Sydney mastering and cutting room, and the 'MAXICUT' part refers to a cutting process developed and employed at that cutting room by Australian cutting engineers...this cut, and many others including several Beatles and Rolling Stones issues, was unique to Australia...i.e. a different 'cut' to anywhere else in the world...there's a concise ramble about it here:
The 'DB', in this case, refers to a highly revered Aussie cutting engineer by the name of Don Bartley, who spent a good 20+ years employed in that cutting room - I had a label in the 80's and 90's and getting Don to do your cut became a very successful and desirous manoeuvre (if you managed it!) because of his complete understanding of every single piece of equipment in there...and his incredible 'ear' for sound...plus he knew how and when to compress...or not...and he could tweek anything to make it sound better...and crystal clear. A genius...I watched him work MANY times in those 20 years. Thankfully, he's still around, still doing it...mastering, that is.
CONDITION: COVER: ( M- )...beautiful ! ... RECORD: ( M- )...looks almost as shiny and clean as the day it was made...has just a couple of the finest of tiny 'hair-line' marks only... LABELS: (Side One: MINT / Side Two: MINT )...has NO spindle marks on the labels...looks like it may have never been played... If you have any concerns about the accuracy of my gradings, please check my feedback for the odd nice comment from some satisfied folk out there.... (and hopefully you may be able to join their ranks). Thanks for considering this item...Cheers, Jules.
