Back in 1980, my business partner Dare and I decided to create a label, as a spin-off from our indie record store...we both had girlfriends who were lead singers in bands, and our recently separated Radio Birdman mates had formed bands, along with other friends who'd done the same...and we loved them all, but no major label was gonna touch them...so Phantom Records the label, was born...and lasted until the late '90's. Now that whole deal's not something I'm specifically crowing about here...more just so you undertsand why I own an item like this...and in fact, KNOW the details of its existence.
So anyway, this record below is something I've held onto since it first came into my hands back then:
ARTIST: DEF FX -
Many/most of you will know Def FX, but for anyone thinking 'Who were they?', the answer is: Only one of thee greatest live bands you could wish to see...a mix of metallic grinding guitars, trippy synth, pounding programmed drums (heavily percussive), and funky bass lines...wrap your imagination around the idea of an amalgam of the 1968/69 psychedelic Sly and the Family Stone, plus Metallica, Can, and Man-Machine-era Kraftwerk...with raunchy-as-all-hell female vocals (themself, have said some reviewers, a mix of Doro, Cherie Currie, and Jim Morrison...yes indeed!)...sound appealing? (It ought to if you haven't heard them before.) Some suggested Pop Will Eat Itself were the only other group to come anywhere near this...but personally I think no-one has...ever. They were so far ahead of their time, that it'll still take years for the masses to suss just how amazing and groundbreaking they were. I promise you, one day it will all click in...also there's enough riffing guitar breaks, thunderous drum breaks, funky bass grabs, and catchy vocal snatches to thrill the most ambitious of live/remix DJs - you could haul so much outta here...it amazes me that no-one's latched onto that yet. (Or have they...?)
Tracks - Side One: SURFERS OF THE MIND / GHOST Side Two: SPIRAL DANCE / GHOST (Edit) ===================================================== CONDITION: SLEEVE: ( EX )... RECORD: ( EX )...has just a few very fine 'hair-line' marks only...looks so shiny still... LABELS: (Side One: MINT / Side Two: MINT )... If you have any concerns about the accuracy of my gradings, please check my feedback for the odd nice comment from some satisfied folk out there.... (and hopefully you may be able to join their ranks). Thanks for considering this item...Cheers, Jules.
