Gentle Giant have a very unique place in prog. They were well known, as were Yes and Genisis. But their music was far more daring and complex, more in line with bands like Van Der Graff Generator and National Health.

Aquiring The Taste, their second, shows all I love about this band. They use no improvosation, but their writting is extremely complex, using dissonence and counterpoint infinately more advanced than ELP, or Yes, or any arena prog band. They don't use a lot of soloing, but their compositions are completely unpredictable. You think a song is going one way, and out jumps a part with a new, equally complicated pattern, with instruments that add a completely different texture.
But it works almost every time.

Giant must have worked months on these albums, or spent months planning before getting into a studio, becuase the freshness of the complexity is amazing.
