The names of most of the tracks are vague "Satanic" references - "The Evil Eye", "Exorcism", "Witch Trial" - it is no exaggeration to say that Mr. Lucifer had the mysterious electronic musician market cornered when Aphex Twin was just a twinkle in some windowlicker's eye. A great underground Moog album from 1971 that's been well documented was the brainchild of Mort Garson, working under the conceptual name of "Lucifer". While it's hard to imagine a major label running with something this "out there" today, the real surprise for folks is the compositional tightness of the songs, and how enjoyably it all works as a whole. Not just a cultural artifact from the early 70's, it's got some genuine creepiness to it as well that could easily be seen as pre-figuring a lot of the sounds Goblin would employ some years later.
LUCIFER conjures up a sinister, minor-key atmosphere on tracks with titles like "Incubus," "Witch Trial," and "The Evil Eye" often achieving a tone that would fit well with horror films of the 70's. The technology available to Lucifer in 1971 was still being developed, and there's some evocative music on Black Mass/Lucifer, to be sure, perfectly rendered for a psychedelic Halloween party strong enough to raise evil spirits on its own. Anyway, it's is one cool/weird/groovy album, a real lost gem of electronic composition.
Black Mass Lucifer is the real deal: an unsolvable mystery that all the 0's and 1's of the Information Age can't crack. It's the Temple of Doom if the Temple of Doom had been directed by Fellini, shot on black and white and then lost for thirty eight years, only to resurface as a dusty 16mm reel sold for $0.75 at a yard sale. This is not available on CD and damn hard to find in any format...
No one knows how many copies of the original LP still survive. This music is the reason mp3 blogs were invented. Here, the *best* original copy we've come across in many years...
