The YARDBIRDS ~ About as good as anything the Stones or Beatles were up to at the time. An solid album in every way, and really one of the best British Invasion albums ever made. Although the three famed Yardbirds guitarists never played together on an album, this 'album' does feature both Jeff Beck on the first six tracks and Eric Clapton on the last four. Simply brilliant. An essential album everyone should own...It's very sad that the 'Birds are know mainly as "that group Jimmy and Eric were in before they became good". Because with Jeff Beck at the reigns, the Yardbirds went ahead and pioneered pretty much EVERY form of rock music that would be released to date.

Just take a listen to the solo from "Mr. You're a Better Man Than I" - who played like that before? No-one. Who played like that after? Everyone.

"Heart Full of Soul"? With its sitar-like guitar, bongos, echoey production, trippy backing vocals? Yep, that's the beginning of psychedelia.

"Train Kept-A Rollin" and it's crunchy riff pretty much defines hard rock. "I'm A Man" with its atonal noise finale predates the kind of weird experimentation that Jimi Hendrix and the Velvet Underground would start the next year or so. "Evil Hearted You" with the melodic, latin-influenced guitar solo predates any kind of world music. And "Still I'm Sad"?! Very trippy and WAY ahead of its time indeed for 1965?!

The last 4 tracks are with guitarist Clapton - which just show how pioneering Jeff Beck was -- with this album he re-wrote the rulebook for rock guitarists up to 1965!
