“Who Are You is the eighth studio album by English rock band The Who. It was released on 18 August 1978, through Polydor Records in the United Kingdom and MCA Records in the United States. It peaked at number 2 on the U.S. charts and number 6 on the U.K. charts. It is The Who's last album with Keith Moon as the drummer; Moon died approximately three weeks after the release of this album. The album was a commercial success, going twice platinum in the U.S. and peaking at Number 2 on the Billboard Pop Albums chart. The soundtrack to Grease prevented Who Are You from achieving Number 1 status in the U.S. The success of Who Are You generated excitement at the prospect of a new Who tour for the album. However, the album is surrounded by tragedy for Who fans due to Moon's death shortly after the album's release. The songs on the album were later performed on tour in 1979 when The Who were joined by new drummer Kenney Jones and keyboardist John Bundrick. Bundrick had been invited to play on the album, but broke his arm falling out of a taxi at the studio door and was unable to participate.”-wikipedia

Additional reviews and information
“Sadly burdened with the trivia of being the last studio recording to feature drummer Keith Moon and thus closing the chapter on the band's original line-up, this 1978 release was also a major progression, not unlike what The Beatles and The Beach Boys undertook as they matured from their simple, rudimentary but still freakin' great early years.

"In the three years since the release of Who By The Numbers, The Who foursome had undertaken solo projects and other individual interests. Finally reuniting after such an unusualy long hiatus, they recorded Who Are You between late 1977 and early '78, in a variety of London-area studios. Without a doubt, everyone in the world would have welcomed recycled Who akin to their first decade of hits. But simple, catchy rock riffs were to be superseded in more complex subjects and daring arrangements. Pete Townshend's observations of moving on and saying farewell (Sister Disco), the creative process (Guitar and Pen), FM radio and its banal recycled music (Music Must Change) and battles with alcohol (Who Are You) are some of his most poignant writings. Bassist John Entwistle contributes three songs, the most in any one Who album. 905, Had Enough and Trick Of The Light reflect some of his finest, often-overlooked, work.

"The album peaked at No. 2 on the Pop chart in the U.S., most likely prevented from going No. 1 by to the Grease soundtrack. The lone single released, the title song Who Are You would become a concert staple, often expanded into a jam for Townshend's guitaristics, and then be licensed out in 2000 for the opening theme to the hit television show CSI: Crime Scene Investigations. This venerable Classic was re-mastered by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering in Hollywood from the original analog master tapes provided by The Who. Lacquers were cut on Classic's ALL TUBE cutting system, plated the next morning by Dorin Sauerbier at RTI and pressed on Classic Records 200g "Flat profile" on Semi-automatic presses at Bill Smith Custom Records. This may be the definitive version of this recording on LP.” - Classic Records

"Seen by many as the last proper album by the band (Keith Moon was to die soon after its release), this is a patchy album by the group’s high standards, neither fully addressing contemporary themes or staying loyal to their roots. Fans should be happy however, as this is the best version of the album on vinyl ever released. An excellent master. Classic Records supplied the LP in both 140g and 200g weights for review. One thing that has continuously bugged me for many a year is the difference between standard and heavy vinyl weights. Do they actually sound different? Most people say no, apart from a certain level of anti-warping protection that is offered by the thicker vinyl. Using both variants I was able to properly test for differences, utilising an Avid Acutus turntable. Incredibly enough, I did hear sound differences. I express surprise because I really didn’t expect any. What did clearly emerge was a greater depth to the entire presentation that worked like a pyramid, affecting the bass resonances the most and then trailing away as it reached towards the treble areas. So, on the 200g version, the bottom end offered a meatier presentation whilst the midrange, less affected, still produced a fuller, slightly sweeter, tone. I’m still not totally convinced however, that this test, successful though it was in this case, is a universal result. Classic Records has the most advanced vinyl production and pressing capabilities in the world and, to be frank, it has the capacity to exhibit improvements. Other record labels, with standard production facilities, might not show the same degree of enhancement, if at all. As such, all I can conclude is that in the case of Classic Records, 200g is best. Middling though it is in the Who’s classic canon, ‘Who Are You?’ is still an enjoyable listen.”
