Tommy by the Who:
Superb uk 1st a1/b1 a1/b1 laminated triple fold out sleeve with numbered booklet. A super earliest possible copy with laminated tri-fold sleeve ( changed to unlaminated by 1970 ) a1/b1 a1/b1 matrices non set numbered labels ( also changed in 1970 ) and numbered booklet.
It's my pleasure to offer for auction a superb copy of The Who's iconic rock opera double album titled "Tommy”, Catalogue Number 613 013/4. This is a 1969 UK Track first pressing with a first issue E. J. Day & Co. Ltd. fully-laminated trifold sleeve. It comes complete with the limited edition numbered 12-page colour picture booklet. The stamped matrix numbers are the earliest 613013 A1, 613013 B1, 613014 A1 and 613014 B1.
The limited edition picture booklet, numbered 71932, is included as well.
Matrix's
: Side 1 : 613013 A//1 1 , Side 4 : 613013 B//1 1 , Side 2 : 613014
A//1 1 , Side 3 : 613014 B//1 1 (EARLIEST EVER!!!)
What is also
interesting about this pressing is the fact that side 1 and 4 AND side 2
and 3 are combined, just like Jimi Hendrix' Electric ladyland (also a
double album on the very same Track label).
CONDITION:
The laminated fragile flimsy fold out cover is in VG condition (worn spine ~ see picture) and the records are in NEAR MINT condition.
The first press sound mix is quite different to that of later pressings which lack the audio impact. The sound quality is dynamic and full-bodied with great bass. This really is a superb-playing copy!
AllMusic Review by Richie Unterberger:
The full-blown rock opera about a deaf, dumb, and blind boy that launched the band to international superstardom, written almost entirely by Pete Townshend. Hailed as a breakthrough upon its release, its critical standing has diminished somewhat in the ensuing decades because of the occasional pretensions of the concept and because of the insubstantial nature of some of the songs that functioned as little more than devices to advance the rather sketchy plot. Nonetheless, the double album has many excellent songs, including "I'm Free," "Pinball Wizard," "Sensation," "Christmas," "We're Not Gonna Take It," and the dramatic ten-minute instrumental "Underture." Though the album was slightly flawed, Townshend's ability to construct a lengthy conceptual narrative brought new possibilities to rock music. Despite the complexity of the project, he and the Who never lost sight of solid pop melodies, harmonies, and forceful instrumentation, imbuing the material with a suitably powerful grace.
