ADDITIONAL INFO: John Winston Ono Lennon, (born John Winston Lennon; 9 October 1940 – 8 December 1980).
An English singer and songwriter who co-founded (1960-70), the most commercially successful band in the history of popular music. With fellow member , he formed a lucrative .
Born and raised in , Lennon became involved in the as a teenager; his first band, , evolved into the Beatles in 1960. When in 1970, Lennon embarked on a solo career that produced the albums and , and songs such as "", "", and "". After his marriage to in 1969, he changed his name to John Ono Lennon. Lennon disengaged himself from the music business in 1975 to raise his infant son , but re-emerged with Ono in 1980 with the new album . He was three weeks after its release.
Lennon revealed a rebellious nature and acerbic wit in his music, writing, drawings, on film and in interviews. In 1970, Lennon and Ono went through with in Los Angeles, California. Designed to release emotional pain from early childhood, the therapy entailed two half-days a week with Janov for four months; he had wanted to treat the couple for longer, but they felt no need to continue and returned to London. Lennon's emotional debut solo album, (1970), was received with high praise. Critic remarked, "John's singing in the last verse of 'God' may be the finest in all of rock." The album featured the songs "", in which Lennon confronted his feelings of childhood rejection, and the Dylanesque "", a bitter attack against the bourgeois social system which, due to the lyric "you're still fucking peasants", fell foul of broadcasters.
