In the same way that 2015's Beat the Champ centered on the Mountain Goats' frontman John Darnielle's lifelong passion for semi-pro wrestling, Goths focuses on another: goth music and culture. The record delves deep in the a misunderstood and nuanced genre and the different subcultures that surround it. It's truly a masterful feat of literary story-telling from a singer / songwriter with an impressively long career (that now aptly includes being a novelist) and a dedicated fanbase. Goths does not have any comped vocals, pitch correction, or guitars.
