Title: In the Beginning
Artist: Genesis Year: 1968 Label: Mercury *original pressing Catalog #: SR-61175 textured Track Listing: see photos Vinyl: EX play grade *clean minty playing copy! condition of labels are as seen in photos; incl Mercury Records inner sleeve Cover: VG+ *textured cover (indicates original pressing); drill-hole lower rh; a little seam wear along bottom, and heavier along top edge rh side Notes: L.A. psych band with a similar sound to the "San Francisco Sound" of Jefferson Airplane. Great fuzz guitar and psychedelic keyboard.
GRADING STANDARDS: Mint (M): A Mint record and cover must both appear to be absolutely perfect in every way. For this reason the grade is seldom used, even with sealed albums where the record itself can only be assumed to be mint.
Near Mint (NM): A nearly perfect record will play perfectly with no imperfections during playback. The disc is shiny and should show no obvious signs of wear. An LP cover should still be close to perfect with minor signs of wear or age just becoming evident. The jacket should have no creases, folds, seam splits, cut-out holes, or other noticeable similar defects.
Excellent (EX): An excellent record or jacket will have a minimum of audible or visual imperfections. The record may show some signs of having been played, but has been handled and played very carefully. The disc may have light paper scuffs or spindle marks, but there is no appreciable lessening in sound quality. Covers will show only minor signs of wear or age, and may have a cutout marking and some slight signs of handling or wear, including a tiny bit of ring wear and/or creasing.
Very Good Plus (VG+): A Very Good Plus record will show some signs that it was played and otherwise handled by a previous owner who took good care of it. Defects should be more of a cosmetic nature, not effecting the actual playback as a whole. Record surfaces may show some signs of wear and may have slight scuffs, spindle marks or very light scratches that don't affect one's listening experiences. The label may have some ring wear or discoloration, but it should be minimal and barely noticeable. An LP cover may have slight signs of light storage wear or aging, and may be marred by a cut-out hole, indentation, or cut corner.
Very Good (VG): Many of the defects seen in a VG+ record will be more pronounced on a VG album, with the vinyl displaying visible signs of handling and playing. Surface noise will be evident upon playing, especially in soft passages and during a song's intro and fade, but will not overpower the music otherwise. Labels may be marred by writing, or have tape or stickers (or their residue) attached. The same will be true of the LP covers, although none of the flaws should be overwhelming, and limited to no more than a couple.
Good (G) Good Plus
(G+): Record can be played without skipping, although it will have significant surface noise, scratches and visible groove wear. While the record will be playable without skipping, noticeable surface noise and "ticks" will almost certainly accompany the playback. Jackets will have even more pronounced defects than a VG cover, with seam splits, especially at the bottom or on the spine. Tape, writing, ring wear, water damage or other defects will be present.
