Original
1970 first pressing of the very first Velvet Underground Lp, issued two
years after Lou Reed's last outing with the legendary band...
Lou's
first solo album resembles the Velvet Underground more than any of his
other solo releases. Of course the fact that a good chunk of the songs
were written while he was still in the band explains why. It's two
guitar, bass and drum sound is subdued, but it definitely fits the mood
of the songs. The songs themselves are all great, although you can't
help wondering if this would've been a five star album if recorded by
the Velvets. Quite actually its a series of Velvets outtakes attempted
with a more accessible sound . The take on "I Can't Stand It" is
actually pretty good as is the version of "Ocean" and "Wild Child" is ok
as well . This album is to Loaded as McCartney is to Abbey Road. It's
the sound of a master on his sea-legs after a masterful finish with his
former band. Here Lou reworks a number of his then-unreleased Sixties
songs and comes up with a new sound for himself. "I Can't Stand It,"
"Going Down," "Lisa Says," "I Love You," "Wild Child" and "Ocean" are
all anthology-worthy. "Lisa Says" is the set piece of this album, and
"Ocean" is a stirring finish. "Going Down" and "Wild Child" are the best
examples of where he would be heading with his music. "Walk It and Talk
It" has a bizarre sub-"Brown Sugar" riff, and this version is inferior
to the The Velvet Underground demo. The stand out track on this debut,
though, is "I Love You." Lou sought to take the most trite of titles and
make something memorable out of it. It has the beauty of something off
of The Velvet Underground with appropriately biting lines, such as when
he throws in the aside "at least for now" in the middle of a chorus of
"I... love.. you."
