FOREST deliver an array of hand drums, flutes, guitars and harmonicas are constantly courting each other in sensitive arrangements, with lots of singing in harmonies both in the back and the foreground. This is a compact yet light-feeted album that effortlessly mixes happiness and melancholy into one psychadelic whole. Forest were a late 60’s minstrel/medieval type of folk-prog trio in the style of The Incredible String Band, Fairport Convention and Dr. Strangely Strange. They released a couple of albums with dark but subtle acid lyrics, incorporating a weaving mesh of exotic played instrumentations to their sound. Their music doesn’t have the electricity normally associated with rock, yet it can’t be described as straight folk either, the lyrics being rather strange and the band’s approach being far too eclectic – thus their inclusion here. Their eponymous album (1969) is practically a clone of The Incredible String's '5000 Spirits' Lp

A merry group of minstrels and pranksters As the 1960s progressed, almost every musical genre was affected by thepsychedelic boom - and folk was no exception. Artists such as Bert Jansch, Davy Graham and Donovan had introduced elements of world music into the irrepertoires by 1965, and in 1966 the Incredible String Band’s debut kicked the door wide open for a generation of young musicians to follow. Originally called The Foresters Of Walesby the band abreviated their name to Forest and were fortunate enough to meet John Peel at alocal gig and he encouraged them to play in London. After a triumphant gig in Notting Hill’s All Saints Hall at Christmas 1968, Forest were offered amanagement deal with Blackhill Enterprises, home to amongst others, Pink Floyd. It wasn’t long before offers of record contracts came their way and the band eventually signed to EMI’s nascent Harvest label.

This, their debut album was recorded at Abbey Road early in 1969 and featured completely original material, with their strangely-sculptured melodies and partially improvised accompaniment. Band whereas “Full Circle” (1970) shows more original songwriting and more diverse arrangements, with themes still dealing with nature, mystery and darkness. Both albums are altogether esoteric, pastoral, serious and communal as befit the times. Essential if you like the spirit of Comus, or Mellow Candle.
