On offer another RARITY by Pink Floyd, the LP titled “THE PIPER AT THE GATES OF DAWN” and this is an ORIGINAL 1967 UK RARE MONO 1st Pressing on the RARE Columbia label!
ORIGINAL 1967 MONO 1st UK PRESSING by Pink Floyd, the LP titled “The Piper at the gates of dawn” characterised by the black mate label with COLUMBIA letters and musical logo note in BLUE.
The Piper at the Gates of Dawn mono mix is much “punchier” and upfront. It just plain sounds better. However, there are many subtle changes in effect, moment to moment gradations that alter the flow of an entire track. For example, Syd Barrett’s whoops and shouts on “Take Up thy Stethoscope and Walk” are simply dripping with delay and the sound collage constantly morphs, unlike the stereo version which is “fixed”. The coda of “Flaming” is briefer than on the stereo version, as is “The Gnome”. There's a whole layer of organ missing on the stereo mix at the start of “Interstellar Overdrive” with a bongo fade-out and seriously different parts in “Pow R Toch H”.
THE 1st ISSUE IS CHARACTERISIED BY THE BLACK COLUMBIA LABEL AND BLUE “COLUMBIA” AND "MUSICAL NOTE". THIS IS THE ORIGINAL UK MONO ON THE RARE “MADE IN GT BRITAIN” COLUMBIA LABELS AND “GARROD & LOFTHOUSE” MONO COVER!
The vinyl has been well played and frequently. I have played the LP in an average equipment and it sounds much better than it looks. No skips, no jumps just background noise in the quite parts that will benefit from a professional clean. It still amazes me how good this old pressings were!. Please note that this vinyl is over 53 years old and will not transform in anything different to the condition listed.
The record comes with the “Ernest J Day” flip over laminated cover in very good (+) condition less flimsy than subsequent pressings, very shiny laminate with creases, edges and corner wear. The back sleeve has the triple flip over and the “File under popular: Pop Groups” in the top (missing some flip over in the center) and no graffiti..
The spine is fully legible with corner wear.
The Columbia BLUE and black labels are in excellent condition.
The original EMI promotional inner is complete but torn on the top.
It is the genuine article and in MONO! This is how you'd have heard it on pirate radio back in the 60's. Not many people had stereo in those days. It definitely has a different sound and mix...not better, not worse...just different!
Mono was the main format of the day and so those mixes were done at separate sessions for each track. The whole stereo album was mixed in a single day with Norman Smith doing a ham-fisted attempt, so this really is the definitive mix of this greatest album with significant differences to the stereo mix. Mono was where all the work and time went and the stereo mix was pretty much cobbled together as an afterthought.
THIS LP IS SERIOUSLY RARE AND VIRTUALLY IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND. THE VALUE IS ON ITS RARITY RATHER THAN CONDITION. DON’T MISS OUT ON THIS AMAZING OPPORTUNITY TO OWN A PIECE OF ROCK HISTORY.
The spine is in condition.
Photos are of the actual item.

Visually-graded vinyl: A visual grading will identify physical flaws (such as scratches) and can help determine whether a record has been cared-for properly. A visual grading will not identify noise or crackle caused by non-visible sources. Most of the records I sell are between thirty and sixty years old and so it is likely that there may be some background noise even if they look perfect.
Play-grading MONO records: Mono records and stereo records have different grooves. A stereo record produces a stereo sound via both lateral and vertical groove modulation whereas a mono record is not intended to produce any sound from vertical modulation. Playing a mono record with a stereo cartridge will create distortion because it is trying to pick-up the vertical (stereo) part of the signal, whereas this is not intended to be heard on a mono record and so is just noise. Using a pre-amp with a mono switch will eliminate the noise caused by vertical modulation leaving just the lateral groove signal which is how the record was intended to be heard. If you do not have a mono switch on your amp or pre-amp you will be reproducing the noise from the vertical part of the signal and so the record will not sound as good. This is not any fault of the record, it is inherent to playing any mono record through a system that it was not designed for.
