Aided by Jackson Browne and a number of her old friends from the Velvet Underground, Nico's debut Chelsea Girls appears at first listen to be a rather engaging stab at chanson-influenced 60s folk-pop. However, it's rather more complex than that; even the more straightforward numbers at points manage to seem strikingly ahead of their time, predating many of the musical experiments of the twee pop crowd, whereas at other points things take a decidedly unusual turn. It Was a Pleasure Then, the only track where Nico gets a songwriting credit, is a particularly strange track which seems to prefigure the proto-gothic harmonium drones of Nico's subsequent releases.

Though the reliance on cover versions and on Lou Reed and John Cale's compositional contributions might lead the ignorant to accuse Nico of having no ideas of her own, her delivery of these tracks is excellent and the parallels with The Marble Index - penned entirely by Nico - suggest to me that Nico's aesthetic vision was definitely at work here. Infamously, Tom Wilson and Larry Fallon overdubbed some string and flute arrangements on the tracks without Nico's permission, but I don't think it's enough to spoil the flower of evil which is blooming here.
