Basandosi sul loro EP The Modern Age del 2001, i membri della band hanno modellato i brani in gran parte attraverso registrazioni di sessioni dal vivo mentre il cantante Julian Casablancas ha continuato ad incentrare i testi sulle vite e le relazioni della gioventu urbana.Dopo aver terminato il lavoro, gli Strokes hanno intrapreso un tour mondiale promozionale prima della sua uscita.
