The second Rupert Hine/David MacIver collaboration (third if you count the totally crazy novelty single) was even weirder than the first. While it’s still basically a singer-songwriter record, this album finds them moving into eerie neo-classical territory, with creepy orchestrations (the stunning “Anvils in Five,” which was recorded in a church!), electronics (“Where in My Life,” whose backing track is entirely ARP 2600 synthesizer) and extended soloing (the largely instrumental, confusingly titled “Concord(e) Pastich(e),” largely a vehicle for an extended guitar solo).
Amidst the musical weirdness, there’s still plenty of room for Dave MacIver’s totally f***ed-up lyrics, as on “Orange Song,” about a woman who goes around biting off men’s foreskins! What were these guys on?
