1967 pressing of the great first album by the MOD Psych sounds
of England's Small Faces
..................................................................................................
In delving into the whole 60’s British music phenomenon, there’s one band that can simply not be overlooked. Few bands personified the notion of mod-music and style than The Small Faces.

Led by the soul shredding vocals of Steve Marriott, The Small Faces had their roots planted firmly in the soul and R&B that inspired the sound of the time. Although their time together as a band was short (1965-1969), their impact in music will never be forgotten.

Signing to (Rolling Stones manager) Andrew Oldham's 'Immediate records' in 1967 appeared to be one of the catalysts for the Small Faces to head to a more creative direction. This first album produced at Immediate was released as “There Are But Four Small Faces” in the States and featured the international Mod psych (popsike) hit, “Itchycoo Park”, but was released in the UK as another self titled album with a different track listing. "Itchycoo Park" is probably a reference to Little Ilford Park in London, which near where Small Faces lead singer Steve Marriott grew up. An "Itchycoo" is slang for a flower found in the park called a "Stinging Nettle," which can burn the skin if touched. This song features one of the first uses of phase-shifting production. The lyrics are about skipping school to get high, but at the time, The Small Faces claimed it was much more innocent to ensure airplay.

Few albums are filled with as much youthful passion as "There Are But Four Small Faces." The songs are inspired, full of life and feeling. They burst with melody and the rhythms are so infectious that you can't sit still. The music is a soaring, heady experience much like a frozen psychedelic wonderland. There is an indescribable joy in these songs, and the sound of the group and the ever-so-passionate vocals of Steve Marriott only add to the intense enjoyment. This band could rock hard with the best of them - "Talk To You," "Get Yourself Together" and "Have You Ever Seen Me" - but with oodles of added finesse. "Itchycoo Park" sports alluring melodies and alluring lyrics and vocals...quite delicious. The special effects are splendid ! The band also hits you with a couple of heart-grabbing wonders like the gorgeous "I'm Only Dreaming" and the beautifully touching "Show Me The Way," with that enchanting harpsichord...so stately, so wonderful. And finally, is there a more groovy popsike tune than "Tin Soldier"?

It's rhapsodic beyond belief...
"Itchycoo Park"
"Talk To You"

"Up the Wooden Hills to Bedfordshire"

"My Way of Giving"

"I'm Only Dreaming"

"I Feel Much Better"

"Tin Soldier"

"Get Yourself Together"

"Show Me the Way"

"Here Come the Nice"

"Green Circles"

"(Tell Me) Have You Ever Seen Me"
