Rare album. This is a promo of Esther Phillips' lovely classic country album that she did for Atlantic Records, dated 1966. The word I'd use for this actually is "countrypolitan'; if you love Patsy Cline's recordings with legendary producer Owen Bradley--it's that sound. Then factor in that the gifted Esther--while possessing a unique talent and style of her own--did sound a lot like Dinah Washington...and you've got a brilliant mashup of the Owen Bradley sound with Dinah Washington. The result is a really beautiful, classy album, chock full of great arrangements and passionate vocals. I'd call this a true hidden gem.
We play tested this. The vinyl still has gloss and it doesn't look bad, but under bright light you can see some small scratches and signs of play/wear. Happily, it plays very well. Good mono sound quality, no distortion or problems, good balance and clarity. Side one sounds a little better, I'd say, but they both are VG+ with the occasional pip/pop. No skips or big scratches, no consistent surface noise during the songs, though side 2 has more pops and some little crackle between songs--quiet though.
