Artist Bio:  The fascinating story of Elizabeth Cotten is an inspiration.  She was born January 5, 1893 in Carrboro, North Carolina and died June 29, 1987 in Syracuse, New York.  In 1984 she won the Grammy "Best Ethnic or Traditional Recording" for the album Elizabeth Cotten - Live!. While she wrote most of her music in her early teens, she stopped playing for decades. Forced to quit school, she worked as a housekeeper and married at age 17. While working for Charles Seeger - a music lover - she began to play again. Seegar recorded her and in 1960 she began to play live. She began to write more, record, and tour into the 1980s. She played with Seegar, John Lee Hooker, Mississippi John Hurt, and Muddy Waters.  Elizabeth Cotten was a self-taught guitar player, folk musician, singer, arranger, and songwriter. Known for developing a playing style called "Cotten-picking," she played left-handed by holding the guitar upside down and used her thumb to play the melody and her fingers to play the bass lines.
Album Notes: Recorded with one EV 654 microphone.  Thanks to Newport Folk Foundation and the Friends of Old Time Music for their kind help in lending Nagra recorders for recording and editing.  Elizabeth plays left-handed, although both banjo and guitar are strung for a right-handed player. Unless noted, guitar is tuned EADGBE, or slightly lower, and banjo is tuned GDGBD.  Most tunes were recorded February 1965, with the exceptions of Side I, Band 4, and Side II, Bands 4, 7, 8, and 9, which were recorded in the Roosevelt, N.J. School Gym (temp. 30˚-50˚) in January, 1966. Kindest thanks to the school board for the use of the same on the second recording session.  Long Playing Non-Breakable Micro Groove.  This recording has been electronically reprocessed for stereo.

Grading: Every piece is inspected during cleaning and graded based on the Goldmine Grading Standard. The media is graded as VG due to tiny, light scratches, but appears playable. The original outer sleeve is rated VG with light wear and discoloration consistent with age. The original inner sleeve is plastic and rated VG+. We've not play-graded it, so we keep our grading on the safe side and prices low. This way, we hope to earn happy customers. Please see the photos for more detail on the item condition. Cleanliness: Media has been handled carefully through a two-step cleaning process with an anti-static carbon fiber record brush. Second, it is properly cleaned with recording cleaning fluid, pad, and cloth. The cleaned media is stored in a new inner paper sleeve. Shipping: The media arrives in a new anti-static clear vinyl sleeve, wrapped in bubble wrap, inside a record mailer box, marked "fragile."
