Coalesce is a band from .

Formation and early years (1994-1996)

The band formed on January 17, 1994, with Jes Steineger on vocals and guitar, Stacy Hilt on bass, and Jim Redd on drum. Sean Ingram joined the band to fill the vocal position in April 1994. The band was then known as Breach, however the band members changed the band name to Coalesce to avoid confusion with a Swedish band of the same name.

With the name issues amended, Coalesce entered West End Studios to record a demo. They showed it to Chapter Records, who had also just released Ingrams' other band Restrain. They issued the first 7" EP of the band and distributed it to a majorly straight-edge fanbase (unbeknownst of what Ingram would later say).

The U.K. division of was impressed by Coalesce's demo, so the band was invited to record an EP for Earache's 7" series imprint, New Chapter. The EP, titled 002, was recorded in one day and released in 1995. 002 marked the beginning of Coalesce's relationship with Red House Studios and producer Ed Rose, who would record all of Coalesce's following material.

In the summer of 1995, Coalesce embarked on their first U.S. tour to promote 002. They supported the bands and . The tour served as a cause of Coalesce's first break-up, as the clashing of personalities had amplified between vocalist Sean Ingram and drummer Jim Redd while on the road. Once Coalesce returned home from the road, Redd convinced the other bandmates to oust Ingram from the band. Sean showed up at band practice to find that was auditioning for vocalist. Ingram engaged in a confrontation with drummer Redd, resulting in Coalesce disbanding altogether in March 1996.

In July 1996, guitarist Jes Steineger called Ingram and the two decided to reform the band. Stacy Hilt was included as bassist in the reunion, and included James Dewees as drummer, the same person who had attempted to secure the available vocalist position before Coalesce had broken up; drummer Jim Redd decided not to rejoin the band again because he was attending the in . This incarnation of the band dusted off some older material and revised it so they could release it on the records A Safe Place 7" on Edison Recordings and the Earache-distributed split EP with veterans , entitled In Tongues We Speak. This split was perceived as 'groundbreaking' within the /metalcore community due to the odd pairing of bands, which was beneficial in the sense that the fans of the respective bands would get exposed to two styles of that they had never been privy to before. These releases also showcased a marked shift in Sean Ingram's vocal style from a full-voiced shout (typically punctuated by spoken verses) to a much deeper, guttural "bark." This, paired with the group's increasingly complex arrangements, became Coalesce's signature sound.

Boysetsfire is a band from and that formed in October 1994. Boysetsfire is composed of guitarists Chad Istvan and Josh Latshaw, drummer Matt Krupanski, vocalist , and bassist Marc Krupanski.

Boysetsfire released its first demo albums in late 1994 and early 1995. In 1996 the band released its first , . It has released records through Magic Bullet, Conquer the World, , , , , , and . They have released split EPs with , , and .

In 1999 the second full length album After the Eulogy was recorded, and boysetsfire went on tour with Snapcase, as well as on Vans Warped tour. Their old bassist was replaced by Rob Avery. After being signed to Victory Records, the band moved to Wind-up, an independent label distributed by Sony in the US. Tomorrow come today was then released in 2003. After a dispute with Wind-up and the following conflict, the band moved to indie label Burning Heart.

In 2005 the band signed to the independent record labels Burning Heart Records for worldwide distribution and Equal Vision Records for North American distribution. It released in March 2006.

On July 31, 2006, the band informed the fans about its retirement through their official website. There was a farewell European tour in late summer; however, guitarist Josh Latshaw severely injured himself prior to its start. As a result, the band played those shows with roadie Chris "The Reverend" Rakus at the guitar instead, but returned to Europe in May 2007 to give Latshaw the chance to say goodbye to the European fans.

The band's final performance took place on June 9, 2007 in at the . A DVD has been released of this show in its entirety as well as parts of the final European tour.

On February 12, 2007, lead vocalist Nathan Gray announced that he was forming a new band by the name of . While the band includes several former members of boysetsfire, Gray informed fans that it would not be another political band.

Drummer Matt Krupanski went on to form a new band as well. The band Young Lady includes three other Delaware natives, including members from Joshua Fit for Battle, Network 34, and Dear Tonight.

One of their songs, "Handful of Redemption", is featured on the video game MVP Baseball '03 by EA Sports. Their song "Rookie" from the album was featured on the Legends of Wrestling video game. "Rookie" from and "Handful of Redemption" from the album were also featured in the video game . Additionally, their song "High Wire Escape Artist" is featured on the soundtrack to The Daredevil motion picture. The soundtrack record, released by Wind-up Records, is the band's first and only gold record.
