Cave In is an American rock band that formed in 1995, in . After several members changes in the late 1990s, their lineup solidified with the 1998 release of through . Their early albums were prominent in the scene. After this release, the band started experimenting with other genres. Cave In later received mainstream recognition for their 2003 album and its lead single "Anchor," which had an overall style. The group went on hiatus in 2006 and later reformed in 2009 with the release of a new EP, , as well as a new LP in 2011, entitled . Both of these post-hiatus releases saw a return to Cave In's earlier and heavier sound.

Formation and early releases (1995–1998)

Cave In was formed by Jay Frechette and Steve Brodsky in early 1995. They named themselves Cave-In as a homage to the Codeine song, Cave-In, from the album Frigid Stars. The initial line-up consisted of Frechette on vocals, Brodsky on guitar and vocals, Adam McGrath on second guitar, JR Conners on drums and Justin Matthes on bass. They would soon release a demo and a handful of split 7" releases with bands such as Gambit, and Early Grace, and see Matthes briefly replaced by Andy Kyte. 1997 saw Cave In's first release; a self-titled 7" on 's . Following that release, the band embarked on a three week tour. That tour was, however, cut a week short due to Jay Frechette's prior obligations to join and tour with -based . After Frechette returned from a month on tour with Ten Yard Fight it was a mutual decision for him to leave Cave In and to join Ten Yard Fight full-time. At this point, Dave Scrod stepped in for a short-lived tenure as interim vocalist. In 1998, most tracks from previous 7" releases and recordings were compiled to form .

Until Your Heart Stops and Jupiter (1998–2002)

Two weeks before the band was to record their first proper full-length, Scrod left the band, pushing guitarist Steven Brodsky to a position as vocalist, and Caleb Scofield filled in the then-vacant position on bass. Their debut studio album, 1998's , featured Brodsky as lead vocalist. The album's release was followed by extensive touring.

Before their next full-length, Cave In began experimenting with their sound offering , a five-song EP which indicated a direction the band would then pursue for several years, as opposed to their metal roots. Then, in 2000, they released , receiving a good deal of press. The band was featured in 's "Sound Advice" section, where their new sound was described as "emo-metal ", though the band themselves rejected this categorization. Jupiter also caught the attention of major labels, who began courting the band after its release. The band released a final six-song EP for Hydra Head titled , with an even further-expanded melodic approach, before moving on to .

RCA Records and Antenna (2003–2004)

In 2003, the band released , their debut for RCA. Antenna had more success than previous albums and Cave In was chosen to play the second stage on the 2003 tour. After Lollapalooza, Cave In toured Europe in support of the and . Shortly after, the band began to revisit their metal roots during concerts, and new heavy material led to a mutual agreement to cut ties with RCA Records shortly after.

Perfect Pitch Black and hiatus (2005–2006)

Cave In returned to Hydra Head Records and released on September 13, 2005.

Following the release of Perfect Pitch Black, Conners departed from the band, due to an injury and temporarily relocating to , and was replaced by drummer . According to postings on website news, Adam McGrath was temporarily listed as "ex-Cave In guitarist" in his new band .

In November, 2006, Cave In announced that they were officially on hiatus.

Reformation, Planets of Old and White Silence (2009–present)

In April 2009, Cave In publicly announced they had ended their more than three year hiatus. The band recorded a new four-song EP, , that was originally exclusive to vinyl from , and first made available at their reunion show on July 19, 2009 at Great Scott's in Allston, Massachusetts. The EP was later released on CD in January 2010 with a bonus DVD of Cave In's reunion show. Two songs from the EP, "Retina Sees Rewind" and "Cayman Tongue", were released through iTunes. Cave In chose to make Planets of Old a short EP instead of a full-length because it was less expensive and faster to record and release. Commenting on the duration of recording, Steve Brodsky stated, "we didn't really wanna make a big deal out of it. In the past, we've had more than a couple instances of spending far too long into making a recording. [...] It was a good exercise for us to give ourselves a very strict amount of time to record and then move on."

Looking forward, Brodsky announced in a January 2010 interview that Cave In will be more selective about their touring schedule, and that future releases from the band might be more focused on a digital medium. Brodsky uploaded a live audio recording of a new song titled "Centered" in July 2010 on YouTube. The song comes from Cave In's recording sessions for an upcoming studio album, and first since 2005's Perfect Pitch Black. The aforementioned album, entitled , was released on May 24, 2011 through Hydra Head Records.

Piebald is an American band. Piebald started as a hardcore band in , , out of the same scene that produced . They later moved to the suburb of and became a staple of the scene. Two members still live in the area, while two others now live in . Piebald's last show was on April 19, 2008, at Middle East Downstairs in Cambridge, Massachusetts, though the band reunited for a set at in , on May 2, 2010.

History

Their first gig, a "Battle of the Bands", is chronicled on their two-CD set Barely Legal/All Ages. From the liner notes: ".. from the sound board (sic) 1994 battle of the bands, Piebald lost."

From there on, they recorded and played shows together semi-seriously. Shortly thereafter in 1995, Piebald started recording, which amounted to a 4-track demo, and a 2 track split. The driving hardcore sound exhibited during these years was highlighted by the technical playing of drummer Jon Sullivan, and the deep screams of vocalist and guitarist Travis Shettel.

Post hardcore

A turning point in Piebald's career came when they recorded seven tracks, and put them on the CD that came to be known as Sometimes Friends Fight. Their musical sound had greatly matured, and Travis' lyrical ability was finally brought to the forefront of the band's music. Another two seven-inches later, Piebald was ready for another metamorphosis.

Eleven tracks recorded at Salad Days became the first record to showcase Piebald's signature sound and wry jokes. Traditionally the most sought-after Piebald recording (before it was immortalized in its entirety on All Ages), When Life Hands You Lemons was considered to be Piebald's best music yet. This release furthered the lyrical style that had been growing within the band, and also showcased the first lead vocals by lead guitarist Aaron Stuart, and a piano track by Shettel.

The breakthrough

Following If it Weren't for Venetian Blinds, It Would Be Curtains for Us All, Piebald released their most popular album to date, We Are the Only Friends We Have. It featured the single "American Hearts" which achieved a modicum of success, garnering some mention on MTV and college radio. This, together with the band's signing to respected indie label Big Wheel Recreation brought Piebald their most mainstream attention to that date. This trend was continued when the band signed to the very popular Side One Dummy label and released their next album, and when Piebald was chosen to play 2004's Warped Tour.

The following album, "All Ears, All Eyes, All the Time", the band's first release on , continued their evolutionary progress toward the piano-driven fare they've tended towards over the last couple of releases, and features such additions as horn sections, increased use of vocal harmonies, and hand-claps.

Piebald's final album, "Accidental Gentleman," was released in 2007.

The breakup

On August 19, 2007, a bulletin was posted from the band's official page as well as in the "News" section of their official website, announcing the dissolution of Piebald.

"Friends, friends, friends…we have not posted anything anywhere in quite some time and our word on the street is that this is our last tour. All the preceding words are true and we have decided to put Piebald to rest. The past fifteen years or so have been nothing short of extremely incredible. We have met lots of people, been to lots of places and experienced a whole lot of life. In 1994 we started making music, screenprinting our own seven inch covers and borrowing our parents cars to get to shows. Since then, we have traveled the globe, released many records, and played thousands of shows; pedaling the righteous name of piebald to all whose paths we crossed. In celebration of the many years of good times and incredible accomplishments, we have decided to dedicate this tour to us; Piebald. Thanks to all who have helped in any and every way…families, friends, girlfriends, vans, bands, fans, promoters, labels, booking agent, lawyer, clubs, engineers, producers, and those who we forgot to mention. Now, this is not a teary eyed time, people. This is a time of new beginnings, positive vibes, and a congratulatory nod to the past. There has been talk of a few shows to give the band an official sendoff, but as of yet, those shows are not booked and unknown. Thanks for all the undying support. We love you."

The band played three final farewell shows in April 2008: April 17 at the in New York City, and April 18 and 19 at in Cambridge, MA.

Their final release is a Live DVD / Documentary called "Nobody’s Robots : A Farewell To Piebald." It includes the entire farewell show in 5.1 surround sound, a retrospective documentary and an anthology of the band's several music videos. Audio from the show is exclusively available through . The DVD was released nationwide July 13, 2010 on .

Reunion
