Remastered from the original tapes and includes detailed liner note insert, original cover art, and spine OBI. Pressed on 180g vinyl. TRACKS:  Sugar Man, Only Good For Conversation, Crucify Your Mind, This Is Not A Song It’s An Outburst Or The Establishment Blues, Hate Street Dialogue, Forget It, Inner City Blues, I Wonder, Like Janis, Gommorah (A Nursery Rhyme), Rich Folks Hoax, and Jane S. Piddy. DESCRIPTION:  His debut from 1970, hard-hitting and raw. This classic album was recorded in Detroit during August & September 1969. It was released in the USA on the Sussex label in March 1970. In 1971 the album was released in South Africa by A&M Records. Cold Fact is a remarkable album perfect for idealists and dreamers. The obsessive I Wonder, perhaps the best known of the album’s tracks, is a simple tune that mirrors the type of questions you’ve always wanted to ask of certain people and never had the courage, but it is the album’s ultra-trippy opening number, Sugar Man which really lends the album and air of intrigue. Others such as Crucify Your Mind, Jane S. Piddy and Forget It are both poignant and subtly beautiful. However, it is the album as a whole, it’s poetic lyrics and the bohemian fueled mystery surrounding it that makes it so appealing to several generations, even years after the artist signed off with the words thanks for your time, then you can thank me for mine and after that’s said, forget it. Sugarman was listed at number 34 in The 100 Greatest Drug Songs Ever! published a few years back in a December issue of Mojo. 

 

For your further reading enjoyment and enlightenment I offer the following background on Rodriguez: 

 

Born in 1942, Sixto Rodriguez, the 6th child in his family, was a Mexican-American from inner city Detroit who wrote and recorded two albums that shine with an earthy brilliance but went nowhere. Then when it seemed Rodriguez’s star had faded, a bootleg found its way to South Africa where it became a rallying point in the anti-Apartheid movement reigniting interest in his recordings of funky psychedelic folk music from a man called the Latino Dylan. Certainly his songs with their social issues and personal experience based lyrics would feel right at home in a Dylan repetoire. It is interesting to note that his musical style alone contributed to his obscurity. After all, Detroit had a reputation for its kick out the jams hard rock heritage with such artists as Bob Seger, Grand Funk Railroad, The MC5, and The Amboy Dukes, amongst others, as well as the pop soul coming out of Motown Records, so a streetwise musician singing folk style songs of inner city struggle in small clubs and bars barely made a blip on Detroit’s musical radar, not to mention all the social unrest of the time period. After he was dropped from Sussex Records he sidelined his musical career joining the ranks of  Detroit’s blue collar working populous. At the same time the myth began to circulate that he had set himself on fire at the end of a show with the lines that ended one of his songs, "Thanks for your time. And you can thank me for mine. And after that's said, Forget it. Bag it, man," and then ended his life in a flash; except that was nothing but legend, part of the myth of this man and how it took a decade for his masterpiece first album to go platnum half way around the world in South Africa. The music is brilliant. The song lyrics are still relevant today, and maybe more so. "This system's gonna fall soon, to an angry young tune-and that's a concrete cold fact," and when he sings of Rich Folks Hoax you can only wonder if he isn't the voice of today’s 98%. When you hear Crucify Your Mind, it sounds like one of the best Dylan songs he never wrote. Sugar Man is a tale of life in the real inner city. Music like this, and a tale like this can’t die, and it hasn’t. The recent documentary based on Rodriguez and his music is a great piece of entertainment, a great piece of `musico-politico' history. And now he is out touring again. Searching For Sugar Man, the movie, see it if you can.

If an album comes sealed (and will be noted as such in the above description), it will be shipped whole unless you request that I open it up to place the disc outside of the jacket for shipping. Both jacket and disc are placed inside of an outer plastic sleeve before packing for shipping. I use professional corrugated record mailers.

RETURN POLICY:

It has been several years since I’ve had a package not make its US destination, so risk is minimal.

 

INTERNATIONAL Customers:  Please wait at least 3 weeks from my confirmed shipping date before contacting me about the non-arrival of your package. If security is your concern please have your package registered (see above for fee). I do my best to quickly post packages, but once the package is in the hands of the world’s postal systems it is beyond my control. With first class mail international my only option for investigating the loss of your package is to verify that it left this country to its destination country. Most all delayed/lost packages have disappeared/been delayed after they have reached their destination country. NOTE:  Based on recent buyer feedback, International packages have been moving much slower these days; it is not unusual for a package to take over three weeks for delivery (especially to Italy), though normally packages should arrive in 7 to 15 business days.
