Everyone knows that the Second City comedy club in Chicago was the
training ground for the cast of Saturday Night Live. Offbeat and
intellectual humor was not uncommon on the stages of Chicago. Many of
the actors came from The University of Chicago, an intellectual haven
in the windy city. Severn Darden maybe didn't get as big a name as
his brethren, but this album is full of the kind of humor that tickled
the beats' funny bone, and certainly influenced those that came after him.
His album on Mercury Records (OCS 6202), titled
The Sound of My Own Voice and Other Noises, as presented by Severn Darden at The
Second City was released in 1961. A list of the tracks on this album show that
"smart" humor bent - a background in philosophy is not required, but helpful;
Metaphysics Lecture
Vienna 1885
Christian Morgenstern
Oedipus
The majority of the album is presented by the Darden character Prof. Walther von der Vogelweide, a
reference to the famous medieval poet of the same name. Other Second City cast members make
appearances, notably Alan Arkin, and Barbara Harris. The extended cast is;
Howard Alk Alan Arkin Roger Bowen on Sabbatical Severn Darden Andrew Duncan Barbara Harris Mina Kolb Paul Sand Eugene Troobnick Composer: William Mathieu
The early stereo is used to good effect, bouncing the voices at times from
right to left, and conversations right and left.
The Vinyl is VG+ with a few minor scuff marks that
produce an occasional pop, not uncommon for a spoken word record.
The gatefold jacket is EX and retains its beautiful laminated luster.
It comes in a period Mercury inner sleeve.
