The film of Phatasm is the third collaborative feature film of its director/writer/producer/cinematographer/editor Don Coscarelli and co-producer/special effects creator Paul Pepperman. It is a richly stylized film with roots in the traditions of European surrealist cinema, recalling elements of Melies’ moving picture postcard tricks, the Dali-Bunuel collaboration Andalusian Dog, Cocteau’s Beauty and the Beast, Resnais’ Last year at Marienbad, Polanski’s nightmare Repulsion, Henri Clouzot’s Diabolique, and American film designer William Cameron Menzies’ classic Invaders From Mars.
The classic elements are all here in Coscarelli’s film: time space disorientation, a nightmare-cum-reality, primal mists, moving still photographs, mirrored images, hands thrust through the ground, a space-gate to another time dimension, and a magnificent telepathically operated silver sphere.
The setting is Morningside Mortuary, where death lurks in myriad fiendish forms and the dearly departed loved-ones are the liveliest corpses in town, where dwarf-like hooded specters inhabit the embalming cellar, apparently operating under the direction of a macabre “Tall Man.”
A young boy, Mike (Michael Baldwin), observes a series of bizarre events at the mortuary and enlists the aid of his brother Jody (Bill Thornbury) and a friend Reggie (Reggie Bannister), to unravel the grisly secrets of the mortuary. Together they encounter what can only be termed as a truly bizarre meld of fantasy, science-fiction and horror elements. Climaxed by a scene calculated to propel viewers into the air with fright. BOY!!!!!!
The action takes place against the background of an insidiously entrancing score created by Fred Myrow and Malcom Seagrave. Myrow is the composer of many film scores, including Soylent Green, Scarecrow, and director Don Coscarelli’s previous two features. Jim, The world’s Greatest and Kenny & Company. He has been composer-in-residence with the New York Philharmonic, and received a Dimitri Mitropolous Commission to write an orchestral work for that orchestra. His Symphonic Variations has been performed by the Los Angeles Phiharmonic. Working with co-composer Malcolm Seagrave. Myrow has put together an astonishing multi-textured soundtrack score, fully evocative of the film’s surreal mood. Seagrave likewise, has a background in classical and chamber music and been a college music professor for many years before “bolting” from the academic world to write an opera. The Birthday of the Enfanta, based on the story of that little by Oscar wilde, which was commissioned by Hidden Valley Music Seminar at Claremont, California. His association with Myrow goes back to 1957 when they were graduate students at USC.
The music for Phantasm is scored for a battery of exotic percussion instruments including bells, chimes, bowed gongs, scraper sticks on cymbals, and virtually the entire percussion section of a symphony orchestra, together with a Yamaha YC30 Synthesizer, Clavinet, Fender Electric Piano 88, Mellotron Utilizing voice and flute tracks, and an old upright piano. Stylistically, the music is its own thing, a surreal blend of other-worldly textures, styles, throbbing rhythms, and jolting shifts in mood, appropriately reflecting, underscoring, and leading the bizarre images on-screen.
