“ At first the piano complained alone, like a bird deserted by its mate ; the violin heard and answered it, as from a neighboring tree. It was as at the first beginning of the world, as if there were not yet but these twain upon the earth, or rather in this world closed against all the rest, so fashioned by the logic of its creator that in it there should never be any but themselves; the world of this sonata.”
In these lines Marcel Proust captured the essence of Cesar Franck’s violin and piano sonata, as well as the reasons for its extraordinary popularity : songfulness, spiritual insight, and emotional impact. Outside the realm of musicology, Franck’s oft-cited achievements in utilizing cyclic form (actually more of a device than a from) and in balancing the instruments seem almost beside the point. Despite its formidable yet hidden architecture, the sonata gives throughout the impression of rapturous spontaneity.
Franck wrote the sonata as a wedding present for his Belgian compatriot, the violinist Eugene Ysaye, who gave its debut in Paris in 1887. It was immediately recognized as a masterpiece on a level with those of Mozart and Beethoven, and has never fallen from favor.
Curiously enough, Gabriel Faure’s A major sonata, for all its palpably “modern” feeling, predates the Franck Sonata by more than a decade. While Franak’s sole effort in this genre is a culmination of the classical and romantic impulses, Faure’s first violin and piano sonata looks forward to musical impressionism and modernism. The lilting, almost jazzy pizzicato-scherzo movement (allegro vivo) is particularly innovative, and may well have been the inspiration for the corresponding movements in the string quartets of Ravel and Debussy. Faure wrote this sonata under the spell of young love, which doubtless accounts for its ardent melody and sun-dappled reverie.
Apres Un Reve is one of the songs comprising Faure’s Op. 17 , but after hearing Pablo Casals play it, Faure himself said that it was even more effective as an instrumental composition. The vocal part lies beautifully within the range of the violin.
