Spike Jones was quite an interesting figure, a musical comedian working in the vein of the Big Band sound in the 30s and 40s. Assembling a group of top notch musicians who were never averse to wearing wigs, playing toilet seats, or tuning gunshots to C-sharp, Spike Jones and his band mixed the high and the lowbrow, the serious and the comic, instrumental virtuosity and sonic hijinks into a blend that startled and delighted audiences in a much more innocent time.
