Artists covering each other's songs is an everyday occurrence, but few are so enthused by a contemporary’s work that they’re moved to reinterpret an entire album. That, though, was the affinity Ryan Adams felt while listening to 1989, Taylor Swift’s globe conquering phenomenon that’s sold just shy of nine million copies. Having discovered the record while enduring the collapse of his marriage, the singer songwriter raves: "There’s just a joy to 1989," describing the album as "its own alternate universe." When it came to recording his own version, however, the sheen was stripped all away, with the likes of Shake It Off and Blank Space now falling somewhere between Bruce Springsteen’s Darkness on the Edge of Town and The Smiths’ Meat is Murder.
Endorsing the new version, Swift says: "Ryan Adams is one of the artists who shaped my songwriting. My favorite part of his style of creating music is his ability to bleed aching vulnerability into it, and that’s what he's done with his cover project of my album 1989."
